Is it a good idea for an AU to have the main character be fictional?

It would be cool if a fictional character could make an AU for themselves where they are more like the main character and have a AU friend that they share a romantic interest in. I've seen other AU like that, like Sora from The Disney Princess franchise. Maybe they could do the same thing for the main character?
