Amendments to the Code of Conduct regarding the Fediverse
Hi all,
With regards to our recent integration into the Fediverse, it has become evident that specific rules should be outlined regarding our conduct towards it and our place in it. As such, we are making provisional amendments to the Code of Conduct in specific regard to federation as we find our footing and stake our ground as a part of the wider Fediverse ecosystem. The amendments are as such, demarcated within the dividers:
Federation
In regards to the Fediverse, a dual-pronged approach should be assumed:
Local Communities
Conduct remains as previously outlined [in the Hexbear Code of Conduct], except:
Users visiting Hexbear should be given breathing room to inquire in good-faith about topics that seem obvious to well-trodden leftists. Assume good faith in even the most obvious of questions, except in cases where a user is explicitly acting in a combative or unreasonable manner.
Do not ping users from other federated instances with intent to goad or mock.
Do not directly link to comments or posts of other federated instances on public posts with intent to goad or mock.
Disengagement rules, whilst not amended, are thoroughly emphasized regarding visiting users.
Federated Instances
Assume the conduct outlined regarding local communities, as well as:
When in a federated instance, their rules (and their code of conduct) apply.
Allow instances their own space for discussion, if requested implicitly or explicitly. If said discussion regards this site or its users, you are allowed to discuss said discussion within the local purview (meaning, within a Hexbear community), with regards to the rules laid out prior.
Conduct that is deemed untenably toxic to the Fediverse and Hexbear’s standing within it (by discretion of Hexbear moderation) may be subject to reprisal, regardless of whether it is explicitly outlined.
We're thankful to the moderation and admins of the instances federated with us for their patience as we carve out our own little hole within the Fediverse. And to our beautiful posters, thank you for bearing with us in this week where decades happen
I officially made the jump over from Blahaj to Hexbear. FMHY is gonna be my main instance because I like full federation, but Blahaj as a safe space is a fucking joke to me now. Mods are gonna insult my kid like stupid pricks.
Free Media Heck Yeah. They got taken down with the .ml domains going back to the government. It's an explicitly leftist piracy instance with a nearly open federation policy. Exploding heads got defederated before Lemmygrad, but those were the only two defederated instances. It's a good Lemmy instance if you want the versatility of something like world but don't want the community to be straight from hell.
I don't know if it's open again yet, but it's Lemmy.fmhy.net. They're the only instance that got taken down with Mali taking back the .ml domains. We were really worried it was gonna knock down Lemmy.ml too, don't really know why it didn't.
Personally, I feel that hexbear should de-federate from blahaj if they don't account for this, fuck all this waiting for them to decide if they want to de-federate.
I'm calling out Moss by name to the admin on my Blahaj account. She consistently does this type of drama stoking bullshit and will even start shit with the instance admin. I don't think Hexbear users should demand it because that would be pouring onto the drama. I think Blahaj users need to demand it. However, I don't think they care enough about ableism for them to actually do it and that's disappointing.
like, if it's not dealt with, there are going to be calls to defederate from blahaj. it's one thing if it's a random user and we can dunk on them but if it's a mod, it speaks to the policy of the whole instance. the admins absolutely have power to disempower this moderator and they should do it if they wish to be taken seriously on their code of conduct. no quarter for transphobes or ableists.
Honestly, I would have put up a thread calling for it already, but I've been involved enough with the drama that I don't want it to seem like I have a vendetta
I'd rather we give the mods and admins the time to try the diplomatic route. a couple of days won't hurt anything and we give Ada time to show whether she's serious or if she's just going to buckle to rogue mods. we also went through our own struggle sessions to decide all of these issues and it's only fair to offer them time to do the same.
that said, if there's no movement on banning transphobia and ableism, we should start lobbying for defederation.
Personally, I think it says a lot that having that comm with that mod is relatively uncontroversial over there, but they need multiple metathreads to complain about us. Lay down with dogs, get fleas
yep, wholeheartedly agree. but if their admins are willing to apply appropriate and firm moderation, their site culture can be changed the same way ours was. the only question is whether their admins are willing to take that step.
