Can somebody explain this? I thought a soldier was only supposed to do what they were told to do.
Edit: I don't mean this in an insulting way. I lived in a military town and lots of my friends joined the services. They told me that a big part of the culture was grinding out independent thought so that when the drill sgt says "jump" you say "how high", figuratively speaking.
From what I've heard from Military friends, there are generally 2 kinds of people you can find there: the normal ones like your friends who do what they're told like they're trained, and the weird ones who get a really big head about it, are generally a pain in the ass to deal with, and are usually given the shittiest jobs because their officers just don't want to deal with them. When dealing with veterans, you can usually determine who was who by how entitled they act about their military service.
