I come from torrenting on Windows where I enable my VPN and then I use BitTorrent, but not before checking if my connection is private by checking ip and googling weather.

I just got a Mac computer not too long ago and I use the same VPN which involves the same configuration and I employ my same method for checking if my connection equals the VPN location I set it to be. I then use Transmission to torrent but I see that it's downloading much faster than torrents would download on Windows. I remember getting fast speeds on my Windows computer when I forgot to enable VPN and so I was just wondering out of caution and paranoia if there is another step that I need to take to route the Transmission traffic specifically through the VPN tunnel? Or is it the exact same as just turning on VPN and any program I run goes through VPN adapter?
