If you have 100 million and you lose half of it because the market tanked, you still have 50 million and your lifestyle doesn’t really change much.

If you have 500,000 in your retirement fund, in the market as most 401k or IRAs are, and you lose half of it, that’s your life savings and you’re kind of fucked.
