As someone who's lived through this process in Russia, you have to fucking revolt on the streets to stop this. Even that may or may not be enough. Otherwise in a few years you'll end up in your own isolated intranet where every social network requires taking a selfie with an ID document to sign up, and any wrongthink in private DMs will result in a visit from the Ministry of Truth.
Or we resort to having a USB dealer who you have to call up to get you a fresh bag of PepperAnn cartoons for £10 a pop
That is the plan after all. No safer place than a prison, I guess.
In a few years we'll all be using mandatory online ID verification, and a bit later hackers will use this data for identity theft on a scale never before seen.
