  • Windows also made it nearly impossible for a regular user to set up a local account, and when you go for the windows account it automatically enables Bitlocker. People aren't used to doing it this way, so no-one actually knows the importance and impact of the account.

Did I mention Bitlocker likes to trip itself? There are waves of the same laptop models suddenly requiring the key at the same time. I've seen a dead battery, a random update, or an unsafe shutdown trip the encryption. MS might say they made it to protect its users, in reality is just more planned obsolescence.

    • All of these triggers seem reasonable to me. They can all be symptoms of hacking and hardware manipulation.

      • I'm not faulting Bitlocker, if I was carrying around a Windows machine it would for sure be secured by it. My problem is how they don't notify the users, doesn't give them a choice, and how it causes magnitudes more problems than it solves.

  • That's crazy. Real anti consumer practices.

Like it's good to have default encryption...

But imagine if a car had proprietary nuts on the wheels so they can't be stolen or fall off during the ride. Then to change a tire you needed an account with the manufacturer and they make it exceptionally difficult to install other brands tires.

Fuck Microsoft so much, they are a cancer in the world that can exist only because they have such power

    • Many cars require a speciality tool for their lug nuts. In fact there's a whole series of custom tools for modern cars that get updated every few years to prevent regular mechanics from working on them without buying the tool.

  • I tried dual boot for a while but it's just not worth the hassle. Just nuke that shit.
