- Well, don’t know about that last point, neither leader cares if they live or die.
  
  While true, as a despot, I'd want to supress and ruin the lives of my citizens versus loaning them out for another despot to slaughter.
Is this not an act of war that violates the terms of the aid the US provides them?

  The US capital is currently occupied by a military force under the control of a Russian agent. I'd say its more like NK and US are Russian vassals at this point. (Very hyperbole but not as much as I'd like)

We should go back to the days when leaders fought one-on-one. Instead, they send minions to die. Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd both said something or other about this. Oh well, guess a bunch of people have to die.

  I could be wrong, but I think Goliath challenged the Jews to one-on-one combat because he was a giant (he was def a "giant;" the part I could be wrong about is whether he challenged or his leader / master challenged). I couldn't say for sure; I'm an atheist and primarily study the first two centuries of christianity (it's a fascinating topic).
I'm missing a lot of details on the matter but I wonder if this is the most credible way for the troops to escape, without having their family slaughtered for defecting?
I have to say, if three years ago you asked me which country has its logistical shit together for a modern war, DRPK would not have come to mind.
And yet, here we are.
