Yup, this is the first in the series. I never actually played the original, just The Lost Mind of Dr Brain (and another sequel from the late 90s).

I was just looking into this, too. Got on the topic of old "Sierra" point and click games, and the as brought up being similar in many ways.
I loved this game when I was a kid
