Dwarf cheery? Rhododendron fruit?
Dwarf cheery? Rhododendron fruit?
This was in the back of the house and I thought it was a rhododendron but I just noticed it gives fruit. I opened one of these things and I licked it out of curiosity. It seems to taste like a sweet Cherry with a mild stringent after taste. I assume I'll live since this was yesterday. So what the heck is this plant? It has waxy leaves.
I also think, this is a cherry laurel. They are forbidden to be planted in Germany.
I don't think they're forbidden. You can buy them e.g. here https://www.heckenpflanzendirekt.de/immergrune-heckenpflanzen/kirschlorbeer.html
HM! You seem to be right! I perceived it like they were forbidden, maybe I misunderstood when I heard about a regulation. But I was wrong, I beg your pardon.
Why?
Cherry laurel is listed on a so called grey list. It is a plant that is very popular because it is very robust and evergreen. But it is also invasive: birds eat the berries and can spread the seed. So the shrub can mess up ecosystems and it is difficult to get rid of.
