Fredrick Douglas worked for Lincoln instead of the Abolitionist candidate.
Douglas figured that it was smarter to get a halfway good candidate in then lose with the best one.

At this point, if someone says "don't vote because everyone sucks" I'm assuming they're secretly rooting for authoritarianism. Two things can be true at the same time: we can vote for someone who doesn't pass some bullshit purity test while also continuing to work towards a better society for all.

For those who don't get it this is Rosa Luxemburg

She was killed by the Far right Freikorps who later became part of the Nazis

She also advocated participating in the initial elections of the Weimar government, something which the KPD, unfortunately, refused in favor of attempting to take power through force, which led to the murder of many KPD leaders by the protofascist Freikorps paramilitaries - including Rosa Luxemburg, despite the fact that she was opposed to the coup attempt.
For a significant left party to be silenced for several years after that violence in the early history of the Weimar Republic may have changed history - and it's doubtful for the better.
