The texturing is stunning! The model looks a bit too sharp (no pun intended) for my taste, maybe increase the bevelling slightly on the yellow bits and maybe introduce some noise along the length. Since the textures show wear and use, it's natural for the handle to reflect the same.
8.5/10 - fantastic job
Thanks for the feedback! Indeed, the bevelling was probably one of the biggest pains in the arse about this project. There was an earlier version I had to scrap entirely because I just couldn't get it to work how I wanted.
Beautiful render!
Thank you!
This is amazing. You have done a fantastic job here. If you didn't tell me your process, I would have assumed it was a photograph or a generated image.
I also though this was a stock photo right up until you said it's a render. That's impressive work and you have successfully surpassed the uncanny valley :)
thank you :D
The one nitpick I have is that the amount of weathering the metal parts have makes the plastic look more durable than steel since it has far less weathering. That is if you are looking for constructive feedback. If not, it took me reading the title to realise this is a render.
The knife I based this render off of looks similar in terms of weathering. In fact, the plastic on the IRL box cutter is even slightly cleaner than my rendered version. I appreciate the feedback though!
The coating on the steel must be really shitty.
Seriously indistinguishable
Thank you!
Wow
That's beautiful dude!
Thanks! :D
Even after understanding these comments my mind is a little bent. So great work. One critique on the blade track mirroring off the blade. It looked as though it is actually underneath the track. Have you tried the image without that reflection on the blade? Would a Razer be that reflective?
Not OP, but I have bought blades that are high mirror, or dull, just depends. But you have a point, with the blade brushed finish, the mirror affect would be much diminished. But the image is so good it would fool me as real.
Thanks for the feedback! The model and textures are based off a real one I have here at home, so the real one has simliar-ish reflections as well.
The deterioration of the plastic and the scratches are amazing. How is that done?
Thank you! It's all done with layers. There is a base yellow layer and on top of it are layers for various sizes of scratches, grunge, dirt, and so on. Each has their own roughness and colour values.
The plastic also has a small amount of subsurface scattering to give it a bit of visual depth, making it look more like real plastic.
This is seriously impressive work. I have that knife too. Lol
This isn’t a real box cutter?! Wow, amazing!
Thank you!
