Sidenote: would a wax applied to the wooden block have prevented this? It looks like the block was sticking at the top of the cycle.
- From my armchair it looks like he needed to lengthen the barrel to not allow it to go out of alignment at the top.
  
  Indeed, but no downside to a slippery bearing surface.
  Unfortunately a problem in all our combustion engines, the piston skirt starts wearing the cylinder walls after enough cycles. Change your oil more often than recommended.
