For those wondering what a Greek coin was doing in Crimea, there were Greek colonies all around the Black Sea at that point in time. Likely the coin was made at one of those Greek city-states in Crimea. Amazing how far-flung cultures can become, eh?

  • Thank you for pinging me. This coin is beautiful, extremely detailed (from the wheat awn to the satyr's hair), and it looks really well preserved.

Interesting mythological play here; the coin is made of gold, associated with Apollo. So is the griffon. And yet the coin features a satyr (Apollo had one skinned alive for losing in a lira contest).
