Centrist Democrats like Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom seem to think the best way to disparage Donald Trump is to highlight his departures from free-market orthodoxy. Good luck with that.
Liberals think both fascists and communists are just as bad as each other, so in her mind there’s probably no difference.
I think it's a misunderstanding because of her ambiguous wording. Her point is that he's a dictator and opposed to democracy, like communist dictators have been. She's not saying he is also a communist.
There is a tendency for conservatives and liberals in the USA to call anyone they don't like a communist, but I think this isn't that. It's just a misreading of her words.
By being vague with 'communist dictator' the listener fills in the blanks. It could mean anything from Ceausescu in 1988 to Stalin in 1925 or Tito in 1948. For someone like Harris I think that lack of context is the point.
'Fascist dictator' is a little too focused and direct. You can't pivot across a contradictory landscape of history for exceptions as easily.
