Queensland politicians are washing their hands of one simple health measure

Too much fluoride has recently been shown to be dangerous at lower concentrations than we thought, and fluoride can be gotten via diet or toothpaste. I personally think water should contain only the absolute bare minimum necessary fluoride, and even without fluoride in water there are other options.
Too much fluoride hasn't been shown recently to be dangerous, that had been known for at least decades. And fluorination had always been a heavily discussed topic, but in places where the ground water has very low fluoride levels, it has been shown 1 to improve dental quality of the citizens.

Specifically recent research showed that the safe levels of fluoride are lower than we thought. I don't remember the exact research, and I phrased it poorly because I didn't remember it. I'll edit it accordingly.
Regarding whether dietary and toothpaste fluoride is sufficient, I'll defer to you on that.
