  • The initiative aims to reverse-engineer and replace proprietary blobs (binary blobs) in mobile devices. Now we have more details on this mammoth undertaking.

What's Happening: The Librephone project represents FSF's most ambitious technical challenge yet. Unlike creating another Android distribution, the project focuses on understanding and liberating proprietary software blobs. These closed-source components exist in almost all mobile system-on-chips (SoCs) today.

  • ive been mulling over designing an open source phone that can have at least most of its hardware made through PCBway, and cheap parts from sites like alibaba. so if you want the phone, you just copy and paste the order list and build or upgrade it yourself.

it would be pretty simple in comparison to the other phones, but modular. there were more mainstream design ideas like this around a decade ago, but they decided it would be more profitable to sell entire phones instead of modular ones.

then theres fairphone, which is the closest thing we have to that now.

i think we need to start building our own phones like we can build our own PC's.

i saw a youtube video recently where i guy built his own own phone with some existing parts and others made by PCBway. and honestly im just tired of the same slab type phones anyways. i want something unique i can repair myself that doesnt spy on me everwhere i go.
