As debate continues, Supply chain transparency may be the way out of the U.K.'s solar transition-human rights dilemma
As the issue of alleged Chinese spy Yang Tenbo’s relationship with Prince Andrew was raised in Parliament last week, a wide-ranging discussion about the U.K.’s relationship with China landed on a recurring theme: the Britain’s reliance on China for solar panels.
“[W]hy are we still buying from China huge numbers of solar arrays that have demonstrably been made using slave labor?” Member of Parliament Iain Duncan Smith asked. “[F]ar from challenging China on human rights, it now appears that we are turning a blind eye.”
Questions about human rights keep turning up because U.K. industry relies heavily on Chinese materials, and there is evidence of a range of human rights violations in their production, including forced labor.
That presents an apparent dilemma. On the one hand, there is the idea of a fast and cheap green transition. On

Conlang Showcase: Ylmunusian
Introduction
Hi all, today I wanna present you my creation Ylmunusian. I've been working on it since 2013, when my previous large conlang died in the fires of a fried external harddrive. That said, back when I started with Ylmunusian my knowledge of conlanging and of where to find resources was... limited, let's say. So looking back now I'm fully aware that Ylmunusian is sorely lacking in some regards. At the same time, I wouldn't call it "bad" either. So yeah, if you wanna comment that certain things are not realistic or anything... knock yourself out but I'm well aware. Still, I'm proud of Ylmunusian, especially because of the scale as well as associated worldbuilding, and still work on it, mostly the vocabulary and translations. The grammar, from my point of view, is mostly "finished". That said, any feedback is still welcome and I will answer any questions below in the comments as quickly as I can get to it. If there's sufficient interest I can also share links to my online di

The Thousand-Mile Summer by Colin Fletcher: an ultralight reading
I’ve found this book by word of mouth, having myself hiked through several states in the American West as well as harboring a fascination with trails and deserts it seemed like a no-brainer. It is worth noting that this is part of an attempt to rekindle my passion for book reading as in recent years I have fallen prey to the doom-scrolling epidemic that plagues this era. I write today through the lense of ultralight backpacking; to study what has and hasn’t changed in 65 years. I will highlight and annotate sections of interest re: ultralight as well as some choice passages.
In 1958 Colin Fletcher thru-hiked the state of California on a 1,272 mile route of his own design.
The book is composed of ten economically-titled sections: In San Fransisco, Up the Colorado, Across the Mojave, Through Death Valley, Beyond the Panamints, Over White Mountain, Into Bodie, Beside the Silver King, Along the High Sierra, Across the Home Stretch. Each section is associated with its terrain in the attac
Racial voter suppression in the US
Content warning: institutional racism.
Recently, elsewhere, I commented that the US 'suppress[es] votes by criminalising being black and requiring voter ID'. I didn't think it was controversial to say the US is institutionally racist. An abhorrent fact, yes, but not controversial. Apparently it is. Which led me to think about what I meant. Comments/challenges welcome.
::: spoiler Part I Voter suppression and the criminalisation of being black in the US. The problem is sometimes blamed on Republicans/Trump, but it is nothing new.
There is indirect discrimination at the ballot box. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU):
Some states … discourag[e] voter participation by imposing arbitra

King Charles speaks with a rather posh Received Pronunciation, much like Queen Elizabeth II did. In the meantime, William and Harry use a more Standard Southern British pronunciation.
