Hair is a very important part of self-identity, therefore forcing vulnerable people to change the appearance of their hair is a form of punishment which may appear harmless to onlookers, yet is deeply psychologically harmful.
I have often found humans require the ability "make fun of themselves" in order to derive pleasure. For their species this is normal and you should not find it disconcerting.
A suitable metaphor for this would be saying that you didn't enjoy having to start a Model T Ford with a hand crank so you've refused to drive a car ever since. Reminds my of my Grandfather.
Many many years ago I gave this book to my mother. Every time she sees an episode she marks it off, and now being 84 every episode is marked off many times over.
