Our board is so small right now, a few days late is still on the front page haha. He for sure has earned his reputation as a rapper's rapper. One of my favorite things about Hip Hop in general is how the rhymes and double meanings really make it so you can get more out of a track/album each time you listen to it. MF DOOM is damn near as good as it gets when it comes to that kinda thing.

Hope to see you next week too! I'm trying to make sure each week's album is something good, but also different from the week before so we can hear all sorts of Hip Hop.

I pretty much agree across the board. I think my dislike for the track length comes from the fact that I REALLY like the production on pretty much all of these songs and wanted more of it haha.

I do not, I actually try hard to avoid that kind of thing. I only have 3 playlists. A general listening, one I can listen to with the kids and a workout playlist. I actively try to avoid having too much of any one artist on any of these playlists.

Personally, if I want to listen specifically to one artist, I'm usually in the mood for an album and not just singles.

I think this album just isn't for me. Long Reach was a good opener and the chorus on the beat is sick. I also liked Asura. Three is good too and probably my favorite part of the album. Shame it is the last track, but it is always good to go out on a high note. Bodhidharma I think WOULD be a sick interlude track (and probably my favorite track) if it wasn't stuck between two mediocre and short tracks.

I think that might be my issue with this album overall. I know a lot of artists make short tracks because it helps with their stream numbers, both because you can get through them faster if you have the album on loop and also because they fit in to playlists better. That said, this album doesn't appear to be aiming for mainstream success or to have individual tracks put easily in to a casual playlist, so just make full length songs. I don't think it is a coincidence that 3/4 of my favorite songs are also some of the longest tracks on the album. If you are aiming to be a lyrical rapper with sick production/beats, give me songs I have time to get in to without having to put on a loop. I think I'd enjoy this album a lot if every track was like...a minute longer. The exceptions being Wolfpack 7000, which is plenty long, and Bodhidharma, which would then work as a proper palette cleanser track. As it is, by the time I get in to any track, it is on to something else.

I really liked the production on this. I like when instruments not normally used for Hip Hop are brought in on these international songs. Gives it something different. Thanks for sharing!

Kind of surprised she hasn't had something take off in the US. Her rhymes and production are both consistently solid.

I've never heard In Search of Stoney Jackson, I'll have to check it out tomorrow morning!

Would you consider this and/or Jaylib Madlib's best work? I only ask because I've always loved what he did on Pinata with Freddie Gibbs and personally have never been able to decide between Madvillainy or Pinata as my favorite thing by Madlib.

I'm at work at the moment, I'll edit this with a more in depth write-up later. Short version, MF DOOM and Madlib are amazing in their own right, but it is always crazy to me how well they come together to manage to be greater than the sum of their parts. I guess that is kind of what Madlib does though. My personal favorite tracks include All Caps (duh) and Meat Grinder. I've always sort of mentally put this in 4th or 5th on my MF DOOM album tier list, but after listening to it a few times last week to be ready for this thread, I am probably moving it up to number 2 personally.

EDIT: I won't repeat myself from above, so I'll be short and say I love this album.

Best Tracks (ordered by track)

Meat Grinder is a top 2 track for me on this album. The horns at the start, cutting in to the grimy-ass beat of the rest of the song absolutely does it for me. DOOM's flow is always great and their is no exception here, but the dark beat does it for me. Also, the very very end kind of reminds me of Spongebob. That doesn't make me like the song more or less, but it is true.

Sickfit is an amazing interlude. No lyrics on this so it is all Madlib and it is smooth as butter.

Figaro is the DOOM show. Madlib's production is good but pretty low key here and he let's DOOM's flow and lyrics carry the track. DOOM is always up to the challenge of course. This track, starting from "On some ol' thank ya ma'am", all the way to "Not supposed to overdose, No-dose pills" is a clinic on how DOOM flows.

All Caps speaks for itself. I am pretty sure this is widely regarded as a top 3 DOOM song and for my doofy ass to sing its praises would be doing it a disservice.

Worst Tracks (ordered by track)

I use the word Worst loosely here, as I honestly don't think this album has a bad track.

America's Most Blunted is a great song. I love this song. I also have an edgy ass 15 year old who keeps this song on their regular rotation just because of the end where it is like "it is a known fact that grass increases creativity". I'm not even anti-weed, but my (legit amazing) kid being an edgelord goober who loves making 420 jokes and talking about weed, but doesn't smoke or do anything of the sort, really makes me have a hard time taking it seriously.

Hardcore Hustle just doesn't do it for me. I can't pin it to anything in particular but here we are. Maybe it is the moaning at the end, idk.

Overall

I really love this album and it is a top 2 MF DOOM album for me at this point. I only wish that more of the tracks fit nicely in to a playlist. Most of the tracks on this album are best within the context of the album. That isn't a knock against it, but it does mean that unless I have 45 minutes straight to kill, I basically only ever hear All Caps and Figaro.

I also think their is something to be said about the accessibility of an album. This is an album that the casual listener I think will very much just bounce off of. Not a bad thing and for people who really love Hip Hop and everything an album can provide, it is amazing. I do think this album does exemplify why MF DOOM stayed an underground legend, instead of becoming a household name.

I feel like nobody else does the style he does at the same level as him. Most big rappers have their own sound and their will be guys at that next level down doing kinda the same thing, just lacking the charisma or with worse beats or like...1 thing wrong. Not Denzel though, I don't feel like anybody is really even trying to do what he does. Closest I'm familiar with is probably City Morgue, but they went in a different direction overall and I wouldn't count them.

You weren't kidding about that beat, that is some classic 90's goodness. Chubb's delivery is amazing too. His voice reminds me of somebody else but I'm blanking on who though. Either way, love it.

As somebody who used to weigh over 350 pounds, you need to be the thing that stops you. I promise, losing the weight is harder than just not buying that cake in the first place.

Very much not true. Moving to another country full time is not particularly easy for a lot of people.

This dude is new to me, this is dope. For sure assumed it was older from the sound, nice to see something pretty new with that old school style

Not my cup of tea, but "More to Me" really clicked for me.

Also, was the end of "It Feels Like Jah" weird or is it just me? Almost feels like it could have flowed in to a different song and then just....stops.

That was sick. I listened to it without looking st the translation and enjoyed it, but being able to go line by line and actually follow along was sick.

I think this might be my favorite so far. Dude's voice and the energy of the track are sick. Beat goes hard too, without being over the top or carrying the track.

If he is rapping in Spanish on the track, maybe.
