  • With a larger userbase comes more people willing to donate, so it will depend on whether that revenue stream grows faster or slower than the increasing server costs. Mastodon.world has run fine on donations alone but lemmy.world will soon outgrow it so we're entering uncharted territory for Ruud. Mastodon.social is significantly larger but I believe they also have sponsors and grants to complement the donations.

  • Most analysts seem to agree Alonso would have had a very good chance of winning Monaco if pitting for Inters immediately. It's still not a guarantee of course but Max would have had to overtake him on track in wet conditions.

  • You're absolutely right, I had completely misunderstood its involvement for some reason. Still, Ruud's experience in the Fediverse running mastodon.world gives me reason to believe lemmy.world will be reliable too.

  • A reliable pipeline for donations, transparency and experience running large Fediverse servers (EDIT: list of Fediverse servers run by Ruud). You're right that they're not directly involved in running the server, I had misunderstood that and thought they were directly associated for some reason.

  • It's run through the Open Collective, and is also run by Ruud who runs one of the larger Mastodon instances as well as some other stuff on the Fediverse I believe. They're a fairly trusted actor in the space and I think pretty transparent with everything they do which is probably another reason many people flocked there.

  • I'm mostly using Lemmy too since Kbin has some issues, but many people seem to enjoy it so I keep an account there too just in case. Honestly I'd maybe use it more if your script worked on it haha. Anyway, I'll keep tracking this just in case, and as I said it's been great so far for Lemmy.

  • This works great, but I can't get it working with Kbin. Since the settings menu looks different there I can't find the button to switch home instance. Where should I look? Otherwise this works well.

  • Okay I was a chronic lurker on Reddit but seeing you here gives me hope for the Soccer community on this site, which has thus far been a huge gaping hole. I honestly haven't used anything other than r/Soccer to keep up with football news in many years so I hope Lemmy can shoulder that burden sooner rather than later. It's probably the one part of Reddit that I'm really struggling to replace and/or live without.

  • Oh man I remember the asscracks guy, that's gotta be like ten years ago now?

It's a bit of a shame the no-poop guy is no longer the top post on Lemmy.

  • That goddamn Monaco strategy blunder from Aston is going to haunt us forever isn't it? If Alonso ends up retiring without another win after them throwing away that chance I will actually cry.

  • I was surprised Merc wasn't better but Aston has struggled with straights and high-speed corners the whole season so it wasn't a huge surprise they were mediocre here. Silverstone might be rough for them too, especially if they don't have any upgrades coming. Hungary should be their next strong track, so when we get there we'll see a true representation of how far behind they've fallen/how well the others have caught up.

  • Not a bad idea. Might need assistance vetting servers and admins right now though as Ruud is probably busy taking a fire extinguisher to the server room every other minute.

  • You are correct about that, but Spez also created a custom unique Pimp Hat award for the top mod of r/jailbait so I don't think he necessarily hated the situation.

  • I like the idea and it sounds like a fantastic tool for people who would have been interested in the Fediverse anyway. I just fear taking a quiz is too cumbersome to be an optimal onboarding method for Lemmy as a Reddit replacement. The reason .world exploded in popularity was the simplicity (just go here and sign up and you're posting within minutes and your Local is the biggest instance so you're going to find content even if you've not discovered the All button).

  • I think another reason too is that .world is run by Ruud who is a trusted actor in the space (he already runs Mastodon.world, a large mastodon instance), and so many (including me) probably felt it would be a safe harbor and not likely to get shut down or run poorly.

  • Suzuka 2005 is an all time classic so I would start there.

If you've managed to stay unspoiled about it, you could honestly just watch the entire 2012 season start to finish. Plenty of great races and many people hold it as their favorite ever season.

  • Yeah I hear you. I've thought several times about starting niche communities that aren't here yet but I just am not capable or even able to be a moderator.

  • Starting a Search-Lemmy community here might be good for visibility too.

  • That's correct though account migration is planned for some point in the future, or at least noted as a desirable feature by the Devs. Maybe even linking accounts across instances?

Having to resubscribe to all your communities is annoying but I imagine third party apps could streamline that process when they get released/refined.

  • I think the level of the drivers is just higher this year than possibly ever. There is no Latifi or Mazepin, and the bad drivers we do have (De Vries) are just slow, not crash-happy. With Schumacher out and Yuki becoming more controlled and consistent we don't really have an agent of chaos on the grid right now. Even Magnusson has calmed down and stopped taking off front wings on lap 1.
