  • It's not even that it's not feasible. The entire idea is stupid. VR makes a lot of sense in entertainment and AR will one day be really great for small things like showing map directions and notifications but the concept of a virtual computer controlled by waving your hands around is just silly. It will never make sense.

  • I used rust as a backend for a simple web app (axum and sea-orm), did some scripting for integrating couple of service (simple REST calls and some data processing) and recently I've been learning to build desktop apps using Tauri and Leptos. All personal projects so far but I contributed to one Leptos library a bit. Lemmy looks like interesting next step but there's always another project I would like to do and not enough time :)

  • What? City is absolutely making money from repaving roads. The businesses that use those roads pay taxes, people that work in those businesses pay taxes. Good infrastructure brings more businesses and more people and let's city grow. You put money in it and it brings benefits later. That's exactly what investment is.

  • This is already done in other areas. In many places each bank offering has a single digit risk score. It's based on your exposure and how volatile the instruments it's investing in are. Savings account will be 1, stock market closer to 10. You're signing really complex contract with the bank but the risk can be objectively verified. Same could be done for ToS.

  • If anyone would care to read the article it's more about companies making more high end cars and running low stocks than making cars bigger. They reduced stock during the pandemic and discovered that they can make more money selling fewer cars with maxed out specs than a lot of base models. They simply don't have base models on stock now and people still have to buy cars so profits are soaring. Basically they made everyone depend on cars by killing public transport and are now milking it hard. Because what are you going to do? Work from home?

  • Ok, we're simply talking about two different things. You're saying that if US would fight Texas they would cut off their supplies. Yes, your right, kind of obvious.

What I'm talking about is that they would not target civilians even in case of a civil war and in case Texas did somehow became independent (they will not) they would not try to starve all Texans to death as a form of punishment. We were talking about consequence of Texas becoming independent, not about what would happen during the war. Yes, the independence movements are often bloody but even Ireland has good relations with UK now. UK didn't block their accession to EU or anything like that just to punish them.

  • There are degrees of privacy.

And what did I say? "Just get extra phone and use some fake google account for android auto and you should be fine". Kind of like I'm saying that while total privacy is not possible you can find a good compromise, wouldn't you say?

  • I mean, we’ve also seen a lot of cases of the exact opposite.

Where? Where was there a recent independence movement that succeeded and was punished by the original country?

Of course you don’t let them starve, but you also don’t let ships into your territorial waters near areas with violent insurgents, and you warn your neighbors that trade will suffer if they’re found to be supplying said insurgents.

    Wouldn't blocking supplies starve them?

Again, this is silly debate as Texas will not secede but if they do it's crazy to think that US government would just abandon millions of democratic voters living there. There are pretty much two options: either US government would use force to regain the rule there or would pretend that everything is OK and keep cooperating (like Spain and Catalonia, give them more and more independence without formally recognizing it). They definitely would not impose blockade and risk creating North Korea style regime right at their border.
