Range anxiety is overblown. Electric vehicle owners only use 13 percent of their battery capacity a day, on average.

Yes! It's intentionally used to invoke blame. Foremost by implying that some list of bad behaviours is only or primarily displayed by men, and secondly by implying that it is the fault of men (often read as all men) when they exhibit these behaviours. I would much rather we just call it toxic behaviour. Both sexes are capable of violence, jealousy, etc. "Toxic masculinity" merely ensures half of the people one is speaking to switch off and might even take the opposite side of the discussion because it's really offensive.
Yes! We need a translator because what many of them say is not what they actually mean. I kept being told I was emotionally unavailable. So I started opening up more, which killed the attraction pretty quickly. What they meant was that they wanted me to listen to them and react in a way which implied I felt their feelings. Most women definitely DO NOT want a man who is in touch with his emotions or is "emotionally available." They want to feel emotionally validated.
You wouldn't believe how many progressive women only date stereotypically conservative men. Here is a metanalysis of five studies showing how women in general prefer men who espouse and act out "benevolent sexism." This is the age old problem for men: women say they want one thing, but date something completely different.
This and one of the stated intentions is increased control over how people use their funds. For example, digitally blocking transactions for products and services the government deems immoral or illegal. Or preventing any transactions without both parties being formally identified and all of their transactions recorded.
The only good outcome of this is potentially slightly lower fees for merchants.
It's true that different people value different things. This is why my first comment makes it clear that the metrics which I value (and which tend to feature very high on polling of features which EV customers value) are range, performance, boot space, and (to a lesser degree) software.
I also disagree re suspension and cabin noise. I've test driven both the most recent Ioniq 5 and Model Y, and they're both very good, but I would give the edge to the Model Y. You'd have been correct last year though. The Juniper refresh made some quite substantial updates. If you're into cars, EVs, or even engineering this video with Jay Leno talking about the engineering of the refresh with Tesla's Head of Design and VP of Vehicle Engineering was super interesting.
I also prefer buttons and knobs and the EV 6 has more but I have to be honest, I hated the touch buttons. It felt like the worst of both worlds. Totally fair that this is subjective and it obviously clicked well with you.
Ultimately I agree that people should try out all three if they're in the market (I also have no experience with the Equinox). Our decision came down mostly to the factors we care about the most. I don't think one needs to feel "severe range anxiety" to prefer an EV with longer range. It might not be a deal breaker, but it's a very nice thing to have in an EV. That's the top polled feature for EV buyers. I also agree that driving style make a big difference to range, no matter the EV.
The Ioniq 5 AWD has 11% less range and 9% less boot space and costs 15% more than the Model Y AWD.
The Kia EV 6 has 10% less range and 16% less boot space and costs 7% more than the Model Y AWD.
The Equinox has 7% less range and 9% less boot space and is 65% slower 0-60 (7.6s vs 4.6s).
None of these are comparable unless you pick only one of the metrics and ignore everything else. I also ran a comparison on cheaper variants and the Model Y increased its lead in some categories.
In Norway (and Denmark), for the price, there is nothing which compares for range, performance, boot space, and software with the Model Y. I know it's taboo on Lemmy to speak well of Teslas but there's a reason it's been the best selling car in the world for two years running. It's a great family car. Prove me wrong. What's an EV with better range, performance, and boot space for the price?
How dare you imply Elon Musk did anything worthwhile!!!
I am hopeful his last sentence is correct. If we see an explosion of new software out there it creates new markets. Maybe the nature of development will change, and a lot of the rote stuff can be automated, but that frees us up for more interesting and creative tasks. Or at the very least, unfucking the vibe code.
100%. I'm not sure if it would have put me off, but I wouldn't be as bitter as I am now.
I have 15 HDDs and like unstriped RAID. My options were SnapRAID on Windows or Unraid. TrueNAS only offers striped RAID, and I am not aware of an unstriped RAID feature in Mint.
Most shit on windows needs adjustments out of the box to work correctly… That’s just all PCs
This is just not true of Windows. I trust you aren't talking about settings in-game, of course.
This is what burned me. I was promised that Unraid would be easier than windows. Dozens of people all promising me that I would have fewer issues, and I would never need to touch the CLI, and it would take me an afternoon to set up. I have spent 200+ hours on this thing. It's finally where I want it to be, but if I never, ever touch another Linux OS again I will die happy. If I had gone in with different expectations I would have had a VERY different experience. I wouldn't have thought that every issue I faced was me being dumb. I have since learned that my experience is totally normal, and I'm pissed off at the people who lied to me.
- The German Nutrition Society, DGE (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung) explicitly does not recommend a vegan diet for pregnant women, infants, children, or adolescents, citing insufficient data for these groups.
- The German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Polish National Consultant in the Field of Paediatrics and Spanish Paediatric Association do not recommend vegan diets during infancy or childhood.
- The Swiss Federal Commission for Nutrition does not recommend vegan diets for pregnant women, infants, children, or older adults due to concerns about nutritional deficiencies in the absence of sufficient evidence.
- The Belgium’s Royal Academy of Medicine advised that children, teenagers, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers should not follow a vegan diet. They described it as "restrictive" and potentially leading to developmental and nutritional issues if not carefully managed.
Isabelle Thiebaut, a co-author of the opinion and president of an European organization for dieticians, said that it is important to explain to parents about "weight-loss and psychomotor delays, undernutrition, anemia" and other possible nutritional shortfalls caused by a vegan diet for children.
- The Spanish Paediatric Association advises against a vegan diet for infants and young children.
- The Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (SIPPS), together with the Italian Federation of Pediatricians (FIMP) and the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine (SIMP) issued a joint position paper which concluded that vegan diets cannot be recommended for children because the diet leads to deficiencies in vitamin B12, calcium, DHA, iron and vitamin D. When these nutrients are missing, it negatively affects children's growth and neurocognitive development.
I have more of these. Veganism is generally not recommended by health professionals across the world for children. I'm sure you can find some authorities which disagree, but they are in the minority. I've provided peer reviewed research showing a clear health risk for children. Not every child who is raised on a vegan diet will suffer health issues, but it is an unnecessary risk, and some of the potential issues are permanent.
People are going to keep voting further and further right until someone listens to their demands on legal and illegal immigration. In most European countries it is the largest single issue polled. What frustrates me immensely is that so many centrist and left wing parties all over Europe have the opportunity to rein in record high immigration in a sensible and pragmatic way right now - but refuse to do so. They would rather lose the next election and hand over all control of this issue to the right, who will not use care and consideration. They will leave the ECHR and re-write their humanitarian laws to reject all asylum claimants and deport every single person in the country illegally. Refusing to listen to voters and compromise on such a major issue isn't a principled stance. It just guarantees an even worse outcome.
I think my country of Denmark has a decent balance. I hope other European countries can find balance and compromise. This problem won't go away on its own. It will get worse until leaders listen to voters. That's how democracy works - especially if they disagree with the voters.
Dairy and meat are important components of the diets of children.
Health aspects of vegan diets among children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analyses
Meta-analyses showed lower protein, calcium, vitamin B2, saturated fatty acid, and cholesterol intakes, and lower ferritin, HDL and LDL levels as well as height in vegan compared to omnivorous children/adolescents.
The evidence indicates that vegan, but not vegetarian, diets can restrict growth relative to omnivorous children and increase the risk of being stunted and underweight, although the percentage affected is relatively small.
Vegan diet in young children remodels metabolism and challenges the statuses of essential nutrients
Detailed analysis of serum metabolomics and biomarkers indicated vitamin A insufficiency and border‐line sufficient vitamin D in all vegan participants. Their serum total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, essential amino acid, and docosahexaenoic n‐3 fatty acid (DHA) levels were markedly low and primary bile acid biosynthesis, and phospholipid balance was distinct from omnivores. Possible combination of low vitamin A and DHA status raise concern for their visual health.
Both groups [vegans and vegetarians] had lower bone mineral content (BMC). The difference for vegetarians attenuated after accounting for body size but remained in vegans (total body minus the head: –3.7%; 95% CI: –7.0, –0.4; lumbar spine: –5.6%; 95% CI: –10.6, –0.5). Vegetarians had lower total cholesterol, HDL, and serum B-12 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] without supplementation but higher glucose, VLDL, and triglycerides. Vegans were shorter and had lower total LDL (–24 mg/dL; 95% CI: –35.2, –12.9) and HDL (–12.2 mg/dL; 95% CI: –17.3, –7.1), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, iron status, and serum B-12 (–217.6 pmol/L; 95% CI: –305.7, –129.5) and 25(OH)D without supplementation but higher homocysteine and mean corpuscular volume. Vitamin B-12 deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, low ferritin, and low HDL were more prevalent in vegans, who also had the lowest prevalence of high LDL. Supplementation resolved low B-12 and 25(OH)D concentrations.
Adults are a little more resilient and some can survive on a carefully designed vegan diet.
This is the worst 4chan space I've ever seen. It's like Reddit's r/Politics. There's a comment decrying the patriarchy with 55 upvotes.
Look into bile acid malabsorption (BAM). It's surprisingly common. In the U.S. you don't commonly use the SeHCAT machines so they prescribe cholestyramine and see if it helps. Give it a go. Very few side effects and you have a lot to gain if it works. Plus if you take it long term you actually reduce your cholesterol levels.
I still have issues with lactose free milk too. I suspect it's the A1 beta-casein. Australia has a really common breed of cows which make A2 beta-casein which has proline instead of histadine.
I agree: I've settled on soy and I'm okay with it.
The author doesn't understand marginal utility. Not all time is equally valuable. When I am on a road trip, an extra 10-20% longer really sucks. The longer I can drive between charging, the shorter the trip, and the more time I can enjoy at my destination. Range consistently ranks as the highest concern for potential EV buyers for good reason. No matter how comprehensive the charging network, more frequent stops are annoying and time consuming.
Disclaimer: I own an EV.
