  • There is a fantastic podcast about public executions that I listened to years ago, which detailed how the public loved public executions no matter how violent or gruesome.

People would come from miles around, they would rent balconies above the execution site to get the best view and have parties while they watched someone suffer and die. Part of the reason public executions lasted as long as they did was governments being reluctant to take them away from the public.

I’m not sure that keeping it palatable is super important to the process. The real argument against execution is that we know for a fact that sometimes innocent people get convicted; to be ok with executing criminals you must be ok with the occasional innocent being killed, and I would argue that even a single innocent being killed by the state is too much to accept.

  • Lots of power, good ergonomics, engines that last and last. I’m no fanboy, they’re not perfect bikes and they are expensive, but I can say that I love every second I’m on mine.

  • I love my ‘23 Indian Chief, good bikes indeed.

  • I can tell you from experience that the moderation queue there is exactly as bad as you would think, too.

Edit: the number of “keep” votes on outright hate speech, it baffles the mind.

  • I’m the founder of my neighborhood on ND and I refuse to even download the app today for this exact reason. It started as a great way to ask about missing pets and let people know the pickup was happening, and it became an absolute cesspool.

What ND taught me most was that people loathe and despise the homeless, they are apparently not even human beings. I assume this is because we all know deep down that we’re a missed paycheck or two away from it ourselves.

  • Holy shit I thought that middle guy was like a long neck alien looking up and to the right and I had to do a full double take and look closer to unsee that.

  • I’m a nix user and I’m disappointed by how apt this comparison is.

  • Mission workshop bags. I love mine, it looks as good today as when I got it.

  • God damn it.

I am a paying subscriber to Kagi because the search results are excellent and there are no ads, so of course you show me a thread on “we should maybe add a small message to suicidal users telling them there is help for them” which then reads like a truth-social propaganda thread, filled to the brim with “helping people is a slippery slope!!!! muh freedoms!!” arguments.

  • You sound like a great reason not to work where you work.

  • Oh, ok, I remember that now, thanks.

I’ll see about forgetting it again because it irritates me lol.

  • Everyone knows how to Google today, this isn’t 1992 where the internet was new and we had to teach search engine usage in school.

People ask questions in forums (online and otherwise) because they want answers from people who don’t need to Google it. They’re asking for a real interaction with a real human being who knows what they’re talking about and can be asked follow up questions.

It’s hard to believe, but there are still people out there who just want the human interaction more than a clinical answer.

  • I, also, ANAL.

Totally agree on RTFM, I almost exclusively see it used by people who really need to put you down to feel adequate. Same thing with the assholes who answer a question with a LMGTFY (let me Google that for you) link, who think they’re clever but have entirely missed the point of asking for input from actual humans.

I don’t know PEBKAC and I’m kind of afraid to look it up.

  • Apple has their own set of issues for sure, but I don’t think they’re comparable to the spyware advertising conglomerate that is Google.

  • I’m fighting the good fight by using Safari to browse and Kagi to search. I have effectively eliminated Google from my life and I could not be happier about it.

Signed, a former Google fan who got tired of being the product for their ever shittier services.

  • Sometimes it’s cool to just write out the shit you’re trying to figure out, glad I could be a sounding board.

  • I kinda thought that was the way to go as well, but I need to find one that supports my giant troll hands. The ones I’ve tried in the past were too short I think so my hand ended up just on my desk at a weird angle.

  • The biggest difference between Nix and Guix is that Guix doesn’t support non-foss software, meaning you can’t use it as a package manager on other operating systems. I originally wanted to use Guix but use a Mac for work, so that became a deal breaker.

Nix is pretty awesome as a package manager, I’ve been happy with it after the truly unnecessary learning curve brutality. I do not imagine I would ever use the full OS though.

  • I’m told that it is healthy to continue doing the things you associate with the person you lost, but I can’t seem to muster up any desire to do so.

My dad got me into Star Trek when I was a kid; he loved it and I idolized him, all I wanted to do was watch it with him but it came on after my bedtime and it was like a forbidden fruit. As an adult I watch The Next Generation start to finish every couple of years and I have for a long time.

Since he died I haven’t watched a single episode. The thought of it makes my stomach ache. I just can’t do it. I’m overdue for a watch and I just can’t make it happen.

  • I wasn’t aware there was a wireless version of this out there, doesn’t the trackball sensor eat the battery?

Can you point me to a build guide?
