It's a good thing that I live in California because it's not very hard to find a job that pays well. I live in San Francisco and have never been homeless so it's pretty easy to find a job. The local grocery store is a great spot. If you get hired at the local grocery store you'll likely get a raise, but you have to hustle. There are other places nearby that are also great places to find work. The city is pretty walkable, and if you get hired at the grocery store there's always a way to get your car fixed up and set yourself back on the road. If you can, I recommend getting a car fixed up before you start making any money from the job. Getting a job is really the biggest step forward.
