We used to have free speech and an open internet in the UK. Now I need a VPN to access Lemmy.zip because Labour has turned Britain into an Orwellian Nightmare.

  • I’m not surprised. They’re more expensive and far more inconvenient than petrol or diesel cars.

When electric cars are cheaper than petrol cars and when I can fill one up in 2 minutes I’ll consider buying one and not before.

  • I’d like to change my answer.

I removed Windows 11 in favour of Bazzite. No dual-booting and no Windows.

I’m very impressed how well Windows games run on Linux, it’s like witchcraft. Plus pcsx2 seems to perform a good deal better once Windows is out of the picture.

  • This is good news. As part of my moving away from "big tech" I installed Bazzite on my ROG Ally on a small partition to try it out. I was so impressed I have now removed Windows 11 entirely.

This along with Mint on my main computer and ditching the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad Pro for Pixel phone and tablet with GrapheneOS it feels so freeing to be rid of "big tech."

  • Well the USB WiFi works fine.

However now my issue is I can’t install Mint onto the laptop. It keeps saying it can’t install GRUB onto the SSD.

I think it’s because even though I’ve deleted the windows partitions using the Mint installer the ASU’s BIOS still has Windows Bootloader as an option.

Hopefully taking the SSD out of the laptop and fully erasing it will let me install Mint.

  • The Dominion must have recognised that the attack wasn’t ordered by the Cardassian government or they wouldn’t have accepted them into the Dominion.

But again. If they had all stayed in the Alpha Quadrant as warned there wouldn’t have been as issue.

  • It applies to every non-Federation civilisation. Part of it does include not interfering with pre-warp planets but that’s just part of it.

Also they have no jurisdiction over Cardassians affairs.

But Prime Directive or not, the Federation started that war.

Lower Decks effectively rendered Discovery non-canon in its finale so now it takes place in an alternate universe.

Rewatching TNG and one line in Chain of Command made me laugh out loud.

During the negotiations with the Cardassians on the Enterprise Riker loudly exclaimes “the Federation will not start a war.” Oh please, the Federation have started almost every war we know they’ve had. Especially the Dominion War.

Burnham started the Klingon war and Starfleet started the Dominion war.

Focusing on the Doninion War, Starfleet discovers a stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant and starts exploring it. Fine, fair enough.

However in 2371 the Dominion warns Starfleet to stay on their side of the galaxy, stop planting colonies and stop violating Dominion territory. Again, fair enough.

After all would the Fedetation allow the Romulans to explore Federation space freely? Of course they wouldn’t. But the Federation expects to explore the territory of others freely because Starfleet believes they have a RIGHT to explore the galaxy and if that means crossing borders then so be it.

The Federation then gets all pissy when the Dominion sees them as such a threat they ally the

Playing Cyberpunk 2077 on the Ally is amazing

The fact that we are able to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on a handheld PC completely blows my mind.

When I first downloaded it from Steam I wasn’t expecting it to run at all. But not only does it run, with some tweaking it runs VERY well.

All you have to do is drop the screen resolution down to 720p and enable the Steam Deck graphics preset in the settings.

Hey presto. Cyberpunk, running natively on a handheld PC and averaging 80fps in Turbo mode. Now while it will run at a respectable 70ish fps on 25w not plugged in, your battery life will be measured in minutes. About 35 of them in fact. So stay plugged in if you can.

Don’t worry about running it at 720p either. The Ally’s screen is so good that even at 720p games still look crisp and sharp and they will run amazingly well. Sometimes you can bump it up to 900p for games like Black Ops 6 while keeping the game at 70+fps and for older titles 1080p is fine.

But if like me you prefer performance over eye candy then 720p is t

  • The DOJ claimed that "copies of Spider-Man: No Way Home were downloaded tens of millions of times, with an estimated loss to the copyright owner of tens of millions of dollars."

Nope, they didn’t lose anything close to that. Perhaps nothing at all.

The kind of people that torrent movies the vast majority of them never had any intention of paying for it, ever. A small minority may use torrents as a free trial of sorts, to see if the movie is worth them parting with their cash on a Blu Ray.

I do this with games. If a game is £60 or £70 and has no demo or trial available I will torrent it to see if I like it without having to worry about the two hour refund limit. If I do I buy it legally and play it. If not it gets deleted and I haven’t wasted £70 on a game I won’t play.

Studios always claim every download is a lost sale, which simply isn’t true.

  • I play everything natively on the Ally. I have a PS Portal if I want to stream games.

I picked Mint because it’s the most beginner friendly to someone who has never used Linux before.

  • I use Windows 11 for my Ally but on my other machines I am transitioning to Linux Mint. I'll keep Windows 11 on my Ally for the compatibility with games and most importantly for me, emulators.

  • Keep proving my point for me. We disagree. Let it go. You don’t have to hammer your point home to those that disagree.

Oh and by the way. In absolutely no way did I even mention black people. I’m not sure why you’re bringing race into the conversation but it’s disgraceful and you should be ashamed.

As I don’t wish to be preached too and as you simply can’t accept differing opinions I’m blocking you now and may also report your racism.

    Need help switching to Linux

I am currently trying to escape Windows and want to switch to Linux Mint as my daily driver.

However when I first tried it on a spare laptop everything worked except the WiFi. A kernel update fixed it because it also has ethernet.

My question is can I boot to a live USB on the ethernet laptop, update the kernel on the live USB and use that on the other laptop to install mint with working WiFi?

I tried to use the internet from my phone via Bluetooth but it was so slow it was unusable.

If this is a dumb question I apologise as I’ve been using Linux for less than a day at this point.

Welcome to the ROG Ally community

    Hello and welcome.

This is a new community that will be dedicated to the ROG Ally handheld gaming PC. So hardware, games, emulators or other software that you can run on the Ally, this is the place to discuss it.

In all of Lemmy there was one ROG Ally community, over on Lemmy World. However that community appears to have been abandoned several months ago.

So as my account is based here on Lemmy.zip I thought I’d try my hand at creating a community here. I’ve never moderated a community before and I am also new to Lemmy so it might take a little while to get the hang of how things work here.

In the mean time why not share any news, tips or just how much you love the Ally in the comments.

    Once again,

    Welcome.

You can now rent PlayStation hardware in the UK. But you shouldn't.

Sony has brought its hardware rental service to the UK after launching in Japan last month.

For a recurring monthly fee you can get a PS5, PS5 Pro, PS Portal, PSVR2 or DualSense Edge from PlayStation Direct.

But before you rush off to secure some shiny new hardware just remember that even though you could end up paying as much as the hardware would cost to purchase new, you won’t ever own what you rent and must send it back at the end of the agreement.

If you’re still interested in paying to borrow a console from Sony prices start at £11.99 per month for a PS5 Slim on a 3 year agreement. With PS5 Pro and PSVR2 costing more than £18 per month for a 3 year rental.

If you’re in need of a new console or expensive accessory but can’t stump up the cash in one go, and are a UK resident I would suggest you look at buying it from Very and taking advantage of their Buy Now Pay Later offer. As long as you pay off the purchase within 12 months not only do you get to keep the device as it’s
