  • Even more frustrating when you realize, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, these new “AI” programs and LLMs aren’t really novel in terms of theoretical approach: the real revolution is the amount of computing power and data to throw at them.

This is 100% true. LLMs, neural networks, markov chains, gradient descent, etc. etc. on down the line is nothing particularly new. They've collectively been studied academically for 30+ years. It's only recently that we've been able to throw huge amounts of data, computing capacity, and time to tweak said models to achieve results unthinkable 10-ish years ago.

There have been efficiencies, breakthroughs, tweaks, and changes over this time too, but that's just to be expected. But largely its just sheer raw size/scale that's just been achievable recently.

  • I'm not sure what you're trying to say here; LLMs are absolutely under the umbrella of AI, they are 100% a form of AI. They are not AGI/STRONG AI, but they are absolutely a form of AI. There's no "reframing" necessary.

No matter how you frame it, though, there's always going to be a battle between the entities that want to use a large amount of data for profit (corporations) and the people who produce said content.

  • oh, really? maybe i'll turn mine off then.....Thanks for the heads up!

  • Definitely opens up a big question about the security of Lemmy instances that I am sure will be discussed over the next few days.

They added 2FA login to lemmy in one of the newer updates. Probably pretty pertinent for any admins to use it....

  • For what it's worth, the admins won't actually see that, they disabled responses on those messages. That's why it says "private moderator note", it's a note only the mod team can see

    (It's still funny, though)

  • I'd love the second option, utilizing SSO so that I can effectively have the same account over different protocols/instances. I feel like that's far down the wish list overall of what we'll see coming though.

  • By default lemmy instances will federate when they're made aware of each other. I don't think your instance will federate with any of you set it up as a private instance, though.

Other than that, you can blacklist instances you don't want to federate with.

  • most will just slow the rate your deck discharges (if you're using it), you need a high output charger to actually charge it. Anker makes a few that will, i personally have the 737 and think its worth every single penny with the steam deck.

  • My favorite npc I ever ran was in a homebrew spelljammer campaign a few years ago, the foible for the party was a beholder pirate captain named eye-beard who would constantly one-up or outmaneuver the party. Also let me talk like a pirate. After they killed him he later came back as a death tyrant

  • Depends on what you're looking to get out of it. Printing medium-sized toys or busts or things without a lot of fine details? Probably an fdm printer like an ender 3 to start with.

Wanting to print miniatures for tabletop games like d&d or Warhammer? Probably a resin printer like a photon mono 4k or something.

The fdm printer will have a much larger build plate but lower quality, and resin will be much smaller but higher quality.

  • Hardly surprising. Wotc wants to go all in on digital. Time will tell how that will play out for them....

  • there are precedents for things interacting with "magical damage", such as heavy armor master. That's what removing the "from spells" portion of the ability would do, though "magical damage" is a little bit vague and requires the DM to make judgement calls pretty often.
