  • That's it. the world needs a different name for writing a novel in november without all the trademarks and baggage of NaNoWriMo.

I propose "November". It is a portmanteau of "Novel" and "November".

  • -ai

    Jump
  • The somewhat new "Web" tab of Google Search (URL parameter &udm=14) appears to skip generative AI responses, info boxes, and easter-eggs. It gives the search results and little else.

  • I haven't been able to put this into words; but I've been surprised at how little thought is given to AI bias both by industry and the general public.

Before everyone went goo-goo for chatbots and shitty "art" there was a lot of talk in industry of algorithmic bias, articles about algorithmic bias, and companies who messed it up got shamed-- at least if they were particularly egregious about it.

But now it seems that "algorithm" has been rebranded to "AI". Because the black-box is a different sort of black box that people aren't familiar with, it's like they're willing to give it the benefit of the doubt all over again.

Even what controversy there has been (the Google image generation diversity prompting thing) has been more seen as humans influencing an AI rather than bias from the AI itself. And indeed Twitter thinks that if only they tell their chatbot to not be "woke" that will make it cool and edgy but also neutral.

But I just don't get it, this stuff is obviously and blatantly biased. It's fundamentally biased in that it reflects the internet without even a surface level understanding of what it's saying. I feel like I entered some sort of bizarro dimension where everyone forgot all the lessons of the past 15 years.

  • Gah my AI detection skills need improvement. I agree AI is the worst.

  • I remember when I first signed up for awful.systems I never got an email that I was approved (because y'know it was a baby website at the time). So I forgot about it for a couple weeks and then was like "oh yeah maybe that went through".

  • Everyone knows a good intelligence test asks you Raven's progressive matrices -- the one true sign of intelligence -- and nothing else

Edit: I was of course joking, but from my own link:

The high IQ societies Intertel and the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry (ISPE) accept the RAPM as a qualification for admission,[14][15] and so does the International High IQ Society.[16] The Triple Nine Society used to accept the Advanced Progressive Matrices as one of their admission tests. They still accept a raw score of at least 35 out of 36 on Set II of the RAPM if scored before April 2014.[17]

Sounds like some pretty depressing societies. Give me a secret cool kids club that's all about mazes any day of the week. I like mazes.

  • The paper starts with a weirdly bad definition of "computer game" too. It almost makes me think that (gasp) the paper was written by non-gamers.

Computer games are manually crafted software systems centered around the following game loop: (1) gather user inputs, (2) update the game state, and (3) render it to screen pixels. This game loop, running at high frame rates, creates the illusion of an interactive virtual world for the player.

    No rendering: Myst

    No frame rate: Zork

    No pixels: Asteroids

    No virtual world: Wordle

No screen: Soundvoyager, Audio Defense (well these examples have a vestigial screen, but they supposedly don't really need it)

  • Achieving a visual quality comparable to that of the original game.

    Uhhh about that...

  • Browsing over the account what really gets to me is the consistent lack of capitalization except where trademarks are involved.

  • outrage that the arrest order was issued while Durov was in the air, so he couldn’t evade justice (this is unconfirmed)

Clearly arrest warrants should be made like hide-and-seek where the seeker has to count to 100 days before arresting the hider and publish "ready or not here I come!" to their social media account.

  • "Hey you said I maybe killed 5 children with murder drones on a mountain could you maybe not?"

"sorry to hear you're not liking it! it's currently not possible to opt out since this is just an experiment. but if you get a response that you feel is unhelpful or irrelevant, you can let us know by submitting feedback via these steps: https://goo.gle/3ySHg00"

Oh gosh that's such a corporate response.

  • Fellow weeaboos (I know you're out there), All That Jazz is a great album with jazz covers of songs from Ghibli movies.

  • Why not both? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troubled_Blood

Some media outlets regarded the male villain who dresses as a woman in order to kill women as transphobic, given the author's past comments on transgender people.

  • I feel like you’re just kinda reaching here so you can tar the author with a badthink wrongtribe brush

I want the badthink wrongtibe brush to be 6 feet long, hewn from ancient oak, and adorning the mantle in the hidden room. The ink can be a special blend of volcanic ash, wildfire ash, meteorite dust, and blood.

  • Problematic developer with AI crush

I thought this was gonna go in a completely different direction.

Setting: romantic sunset beach, without a crowd in sight. There is no sound but that of a gentle breeze, waves lapping at the shore, and seagulls in the distance. Ryan turns to his girlfriend Tiffany. He gets down on his knees, the sand muddying his pants. Tiffany clasps her hands over her mouth in disbelief. Ryan says: "Tiffany you are the light of my life. You have made me a better man. I can't see me living with anyone else but you. Will... will you marry m-- bzzt. Thank you for using Virtua-Boyfriend, unfortunately we ran out of VC money so are shutting down.".

  • Pretty sure that was just a Tao Te Ching joke.

So let's run with it (I'm so sorry)
