Are there any plot arcs, or missed opportunities from any TV series that were abandoned that you think should've been picked up or continued?

  • Okay, so I'm the guy who set up television@lemm.ee. My instinct would be to say that the "TV" side should all come under that just because of the name being more intuitive. I was sorta surprised "Television" wasn't taken. I do realise also this community is quite a bit larger than my community.

The history of this seems a bit odd as the name is technically "showsandmovies" yet it's been repurposed to be about television, or was instantly edited to become about TV/streaming. But that's my bit.

I haven't a clue what to do with "moviesandtv" though lol.

  • Well, what does "filler" here mean to you? Dark is a tragedy where the characters in a personal sense aren't really relevant. It's hardly a series about 'slice of life' or "spend time with Jonas/Martha" to see what they get up to.

  • Filler episodes are important because they focus on character development and they give a break from the main plot.

I guess it depends on the show. Some shows are structured to work like that. Other shows like Game of Thrones, Black Sails, just aren't.

  • Yeah, I made television because I didn't think showsandmovies mod team was active. I was then headhunted to help out there. I don't know where television stands now though even if I think it has the best name for... well, tv-posting. Whilst I agree with "showsandmovies" is an odd name as its been repurposed for TV primarily... but it seems to be the most popular and developed.

But whilst you can obviously overlap to some degree, movies and tv are just as commonly separate communities so from 4 you can get at least 2.

  • Sure thing. Lemmy could really fix it to allow mods to post in their communities without signifying they're a mod tbh. Makes it all seem kinda aggressive. I can sticky this thread there and uh, clean up the old stickied "What are you watching threads"?

Also why is it called "showsandmovies" when its been redone to TV (just curious).

And there is a bit of what I'd call off-topic movie posting on there. So I'm not sure the desired scope.

  • You could make a movie about George Washington, and cast Ildris Elba in the role, and it still wouldn’t matter. The actor being black only matters if you refuse to recognize that acting is all playing pretend.

I have no particular comment or specific interest regarding Harry Potter anymore, but I will add that the actor cast for Snape (Paapa Essiedu) is very strange. I watched him in The Lazarus Project and he just doesn't really seem to have any snape-like tendencies.

Now, you want something that matters? Try refilming Roots with Chinese actors. That’s a massive mountain of disbelief to climb over. And it bypasses the story as a story of African people being stolen from Africa and enslaved. It could be done, but the story itself is so intrinsically tied to the black experience in america that trying to excise that part would make it almost impossible to immerse into, regardless of the ethical questions of negating black representation on screen.

I mean, there's Warrior (2019) here if you want something like this. But I would add on an adjacent note that if I was watching a TV show set in Joseon Korea, I would expect it to be 99.9% Korean ethnicity (or people who could pass) and anything less would take me out of it.
