Reverend Insanity, a Chinese xianxia novel so good the CCP banned the writer from finishing it.
One of my favorite novels, extremely well written with very good world building and an amazing use of universe specific parables that add a uniqueness to the novel. The MC is complex, probably neutral evil and commits questionable actions only if it benefits him. The way everything has a consequences later down the line gives a real stake in what the characters do and what has happened and could happen. Most characters aren't stupid or arrogant. Gu's are also a unique tool, similar to the demon war's saga but instead of rocks/minerals it's "bugs" and has much more depth.
Wenovel website synopsis: A story of a villain, Fang Yuan who was reborn 500 years into the past with the Spring Autumn Cicada he painstakingly refined. With his profound wisdom, battle and life experiences, he seeks to overcome his foes with skill and wit! Ruthless and amoral, he has no need to hold back as he pursues his ultimate goals. In a world of cruelty where one cultivates using Gu - magical creatures of the world - Fang Yuan must rise up above all with his own power.
Lets face it Qidian is extremely greedy and Wuxiaworld is no longer run by the people who were passionate about the scene, the owner got bought out and left. They implemented the same systems they mocked and promised to never emulate.
My recommendation to to buy ebooks Wuxiaworld sells if you want to support the scene, though the kindle format is infested with drm.
