Free and Open Source Software
My daughter wants to edit footage from roblox for her stuff, yknow, and she's been using CapCut but it has a size limit which is frustrating.
Is there an easy and fun foss alternative to capcut?
. . . what do you use instead? AlternativeTo mentions (among a few others) Cozy and Filen; anyone use either of these? Internxt got a pretty bad review from someone on Medium.
Hi all,
I'm looking for a FOSS app to track some health data.
Nothing crazy, just to track some chronic back pain and see how it trends while also keeping track of when I take pain meds and when I exercise.
Thanks!
I know of peertube, which is similar to youtube.
But is there anything that is similar to instgram reels, tiktok type stuff.
I imagine it doesn’t exist because the hosting costs would be exorbitant, but I’m curious incase something like it does?
I have ADHD and have issues focusing on what I have to get done.
I am searching for a app such as this one where I can focus for a specific amount of time (like a pomodoro) but that stays on top of other apps. Does anyone know any FOSS app that is able to do such thing?
I am currently using Logseq with the Pomodoro timer plug-in.
In addition, what apps are you currently using for productivity? I am not talking about specific work tools like code editors. I currently use Logseq/Anytype (trying to transfer a few things to Anytype as it has support for templates). I tried using Vikunja but I didn't like it very much, we still use it for home management as it has support for recurring tasks.

Looking past Proton apps because as a Linux user I'm tired of being treated like a second-class citizen.
What are people's recommendation between LibreTube, NewPipe, and PipePipe?
I don't subscribe or download videos through app, I primarily use on occassion to listen to random music videos while I'm out somewhere, I do not watch content on phone, only listen to something.

I was wondering if anyone has discovered a Google Slides alternative web app where I could have, I can create presentations where in a privacy focused manner, something like proton docs.
I just don't feel like using Google Slides even Though it's pretty well known and I might use it. I just don't trust Google if you know what I mean

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ndlug.org/post/1040526 > A judge has dismissed the majority of claims in a copyright lawsuit filed by developers against GitHub, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
> The lawsuit was initiated by a group of developers in 2022 and originally made 22 claims against the companies, alleging copyright violations related to the AI-powered GitHub Copilot coding assistant.
> Judge Jon Tigar’s ruling, unsealed last week, leaves only two claims standing: one accusing the companies of an open-source license violation and another alleging breach of contract. This decision marks a substantial setback for the developers who argued that GitHub Copilot, which uses OpenAI’s technology and is owned by Microsoft, unlawfully trained on their work.

> Despite this significant ruling, the legal battle is not over. The remaining claims regarding breach of contract and open-source license violations are likely to continue through litigation.

Maybe an error? Honestly this is a weird one. I hope we will learn more in the coming hours.
You can still get it on the other channels, like F-Droid or Obtainium. Still, we all know that not being on the Play Store is an heavy sentence for any Android app.

Despite this success, a new and innovative program is needed to acknowledge the lived reality of how many maintainers work: stretched across multiple technologies, multi-faceted, and often behind the scenes. > > > Most maintainers are unpaid, working in their spare time, which both impacts projects’ stability and can lead to stress and burnout. The Tidelift Open Source Maintainer Study found that 59% of maintainers have quit or considered quitting, posing a risk to the digital infrastructure we all rely on. To even begin to mitigate this risk, it's crucial to understand the role of maintainers, who typically lead and oversee project development, review changes, manage community interactions, release updates, and fix security issues. > > > The application phase will start by the end of the third quarter of 2024, and with the goal that selected maintainers can begin the fellowship in the fourth quarter. I've actually just been using Signal's built in camera app, which has been fine, but doesn't seem quite up to par today (or maybe I'm just in a mood). Does anyone know if there's a way to reset Signal's camera app settings? Otherwise I just use Graphene's camera, which might also be fine (maybe I need to get my eyes checked). Anyway, any camera apps that automatically take great pictures? I'm trying to photograph some old drawings for posterity.

More of a showerthought, but still.
Yesterday, I just pulled out from the dead my opendesktop account and discovered that they are now offering multiple online services as well: There is GitLab, Mastodon and Nextcloud for pretty much anything you want. I, myself, am not a developer, so the most useful for me would be the latter two - specifically Nextcloud, where they offer a whopping (for me) 5 GB free storage.
I am not new to Nextcloud, as my Friendica node admin also provides a Nextcloud instance with some storage available, and the availability to increase it by mounting external storage sources, such as Amazon S3, WebDAV or even other Nextcloud mounts.
For note-taking, I am using Notable and keeping my notes in
.md
files, as this allows me to use just about any program I want to edit them on other devices (or switch from it seamlessly if I don't like it), but the way it works is to have a subfolder callednotes
on every "data directory" that you point it to. However, the Nextcloud notes app just wants to use the folder named in your default locale (in my case, it was called "Note")So what did I do? I mounted the folder "Note" on opendesktop, as "notes" back on my node's Nextcloud server. On my phone, I do not have this issue, so I can use it with whatever name I want.
Now, I know I could simply use another note-taking app instead on my desktop, or just switch the locale on the other side. But I am sure there are plenty of use cases where a program just expects a certain folder to be somewhere, but you're unable to rename it there or use a different folder, so that is a welcome feature. And I now have the ability to access my notes both online and on whichever device I use, which is super handy.
Next-up, I plan to store some music there, as it also has a music app. Then I want to mount the folder as WebDAV on my phone, for foobar2000.
I just love Open Source 😁
Below there are some pics with the whole setup in action:
