Hey there! I just found a very nice offer for the 4i4 audio interface. Do I understand correctly, that there are 3 differen audio outputs that I can rout to? So main1 and main2 and headphones? I would like to route my Ableton headphones out (what gets played when selecting instruments and stuff like that) to the actual headphones channel instead of the main out?
Thanks a lot in advance, happy producing!

A dark instrumental piece I wrote and performed.
Mix of orchestra, guitar and Piano.
Sorry if it looks like promote. Just a song I wanted to share
Hi, I create videos to educate others on living more with nature instead of from nature. Anyway, I currently pay for Epidemic Sound. I only use the songs from a single band for all of my videos. So, Epidemic Sound is getting a lot of money for a dozen songs from the same band.
I'd rather pay the artists for their work than Epidemic Sound. But I don't know where to start. I'd like to find something like the songs by Wanderer's Trove to use for my videos. I don't mind paying as much as I do with ES. I'd just rather it go to the artist than a corporation. Any advice on how to find such songs without going for a subscription?
Thank you!
PS: I really hope this is the right community for this question. I don't know much about music or music production at all.
There seems to be a lot of AI audio tools; anyone try them for audio isolation? My usecase is separating a song from a 5.1 movie mix, there's a great remix of Hot Blooded I wanna preserve

How many unfinished tracks do you have knocking around on a hard drive somewhere? I was just looking through a big folder of 150 that I organized into one folder like 5 years ago. I don't know what the true total is. Anyone else find this super overwhelming haha? I'm maybe just gonna dump it on the public like Mac Demarco lol

I was recently listening to music while in a conference call with my headphones, and I noticed that they changed to a "hands-free mode" and the music that I was listening to degraded to something that sounded like elevator music. Is there a way to apply this to any song that I have a file for?

I'm pretty new to creating synth patches, but I learn best by experimenting and trying to reproduce things I know I like. I'm not looking to recreate this sound perfectly, but if anyone here could offer some guidance on how to achieve a roughly similar sound, or even just a good place to start, I'd really appreciate it. > > I'm mainly using ZynAddSubFX but don't mind trying out other software.
A conversation popped up on another platform about the role of AI in music production, generally as its used in the mastering process. Now I'm not sure how much AI that actually involves and see it more as a set of rules that will map your song or music to a contemporary 'good mix'... basically control the EQ, RMS peak and LUFS. Things like this are becoming more and more prominent on music histinf sites.
I do use AI in some processing as I use software like Steinberg's SpectraLayers to 'un-layer' and un-mix tonal qualities, and so on but I don't use it in mastering. I do that the old fashioned way.
Your thoughts..? Yay or nay..?
I’m struggling to pan the chorus of my song. It only has drums, bass, one slightly distorted guitar and a lead vocal.
The drums have a nice default panning spread from L-R in the DAW I’m using (Logic). But the convention I’m reading online recommends putting bass and vocal in the centre.
My question is, what do I do with the guitar, which is just playing a power chord at the beginning of each bar.
I like songs that fill the stereo spectrum but due to the composition, this one seems narrow by comparison.
I’ve read about stereo expanders but I’m not sure when to sure them. I was also thinking that I could somehow split the guitar into two tracks by frequency and pan those differently. Not sure how to go about that yet and then not sure if I would need to do the same for vocals in that case.
Any suggestions on how to make the mix a bit more exciting without changing the composition ?

Open exchange format for DAWs. Contribute to bitwig/dawproject development by creating an account on GitHub.
Bitwig and Presonus just released an open source exchange format between DAW. It would even transfer automation data which seemed to be until now a pain point. I think it's a good thing to be able to collaborate with other musicians easily.
So what do you guys think?
Okay, so this isn't a production software question, but I don't know where else to ask. I am looking for a replacement for Thimeo SteroTool. I LOVE this VST processor, but at €385 with the declipper, delossifier, and dynamic EQ options, it's a real serious dent in my budget.
Is there anything remotely close in the FOSS space at a more reasonable price point?
Arturia added another classic emulation to their product list, Acid V, a 303 clone.
Any seasoned Arturia users, do you think this will get added to the next Analog Lab bundle? I wonder how often they rev that.

My OS and software are on a 2280 nvme 1TB drive. I'm thinking of installing a 2nd m.2 2242 drive in the wwan slot (it does work on my laptop) and putting my drum samples on that.
My question is, would this increase performance?

Excited to announce my first #VST plugin : emulation of a Neve console strip.
Format #VST3 (WIN), #AU (MAC-intel), Free to use (CC/BY/ND)
A smooth progressive saturation with built-in oversampling, coupled with a finely tuned filter section which response carefully matches original console character.
Perfect on drum kits, basslines, or to push some smooth saturated 12k Air on vocals.

I'm trying out this new content format. Please let me know what you think :)
I've got an unusual problem. Previously I would have asked Reddit, but screw them. Please let me know if this isn't an appropriate usage of Lemmy or this... Sub-Lemmy? Anyway I've got an XDJ-RR that originally had been connected directly to our Sony receiver via RCA jacks on both devices. Audio was really good and it might clip if the levels were pushed to the extreme on the decks, but was controllable. Now we've connected the decks to an M-Audio Air 192 6 and run the audio through the computer using the XLR jacks on both devices. Now every sound from the decks wants to clip and the audio interface level meters are showing clipping. I've got the input turned all the way down to 1 on the M-Audio interface and we have to keep the master on the decks well more than halfway to negative infinity. The master level meters on the decks barely register. Some things I'm considering:
- The RCA outputs on the decks run through a compressor for the basic removed while the XLR outs are raw and I'm expected to know how to deal with it.
- My XLR cables are too low resistance. I bought these years ago for microphone recording. They're Mogami neglex 2549 microphone cables.
- Either the XDJ-RR or M-Audio Air 192 6 are defective.
- There's a setting on the computer I could find to turn down the input gains aside from the the knobs provided on the M-Audio Air.
- ???
Some more Notes: I'm using QJackCtl with Carla on the computer. Mostly we just patch the inputs to the outputs of the audio interface to play, but will also patch into OBS Studio for twitch streaming or Ardour for recording. Even though we keep the input gains pegged at the bottom, the main output knob is kept maxed out. Turning it down didn't help with the clipping but brought the ouptut levels down unnecessarily.
Hey. I've noticed this community has been pretty silent for quite a while. This was one of the reasons I made a music production community over at waveform.social (link below). If you want to discuss music stuff, a specialized instance is way better than sticking to the drama of large instances (a lesson I learned only after creating the community at sh.itjust.works)
I've been posting content over at waveform.social, lemmy.studio and sh.itjust.works, all in their respective music production communities.
Waveform.social and lemmy.studio have other active communities related to making music all about synthesizers, gear and DAWs.
If you want to participate, head over to any instance that strikes your fancy and check it out!
Waveform.social link: !musicproduction@waveform.social
Lemmy.studio link: !musicproduction@lemmy.studio
Sh.itjust.works link [Warning - General instance]:!musicproduction@sh.itjust.works
On the off-chance that the community moderator here is still active, feel free to delete this post. I'll be happy to post my content here if I know it's still being moderated!
EDIT in the end, I settled on an Audient iD24, managed to get one from Juno for around £250
As per title... and to clarify, I don't just mean a headphone port, I mean an internal bus separate from the main outs, that can be seleCubase. This info doesn't seem to be present on the manufacturer's blurb; I've just been stung buying a Presonus 24c which it turns out only has 'Main Out L / R'.
Presonus support solution is to use their DAW, I am already fluent in Cubase / Ableton and have no desire to learn a third (StudioOne)! My main interface at home is a UAD Apollo which has main outs, virtual busses, and a headphone bus. I wanted to get a different interface for live stuff & travelling.
Obviously UAD is a higher tier than the £150 24c so perhaps I was expecting too much from it. I need an interface with headphone bus as I use that to run Slate VSX (headphone software).

Is anyone (happy with) using wireless noise-canceling headphones/earplugs for audio production?
Heya! I’m thinking about purchasing wireless noise-canceling earplugs (e.g. the Sony WF-1000XM4 or Apple AirPods Pro), mostly for listening to music on the go. But I was also wondering whether there are any issues (aside from the latency one) when it comes to making music on the go with these headphones? I assume it’s generally possible to configure Ableton Live to use those Bluetooth headphones instead of the internal audio card? And there’s most probably a quite high latency, but I would probably be fine with that (at least in most mobile music production situations where I would just use the internal audio card of the MacBook Pro). Anyway, would love to hear experiences from people who did this!
Edit: I’m currently using Audio-Technica ATH-M50 X (mostly at home) and Shure SE-215 (mostly on the go). So especially with regards to the Shure earplugs I’m probably quite used to not having a super neutral listening experience already.

@musicproduction "The Other Side" is the third LP from the Swiss artist "Saint Cyr". The music is inspired by the Doom Rock and Doom Metal scene, but exclusively produced with electronic and synthetic instruments. The tempo is slow, the chant is clear but the atmosphere is heavy and dark... The light is at the end of the tunnel but "The Other Side" is not an easy road...

Punk Labs just released OneTrick Simian, an audio Plugin drum machine perfect for this vintage drum sound. If you're doing any kind of retrowave, synthwave, vaporware etc, it's just perfect. Give it a try and tell us how you like it. And share your music.
And I really like their website and marketing!
I did a sample pack for musicians using a modular synthesizer a while ago. It's made of 23 Risers for different music genres. I hosted it for a while on another platform, and as I'm moving to a more robust solution, I want to share it again with you all #musicians.
The risers are CC0, there's no E-Mail trap, no tracking, nothing. They are entirely free. Click the link, download them, et voilà!

> Back in the early nineties, hardcore and jungle dominated the UK dance music scene. These massive tracks were created on limited hardware and computers you’d usually associate with playing games. Pete Cannon recreates an authentic jungle sound by combining modern technology with the original hardware used to create these tracks.
