So how do you get around it? If the only answer is keep running my windows 7 machine or install Linux, I'm going to be disappointed

If you think that linux is a disappointment compared to using windows, I think you're too far gone.

No, people don't try because they're intellectually lazy and change takes effort. But there is nothing good left with new versions of windows so there is no excuse anymore.
