They're shooting for the first time and the targets are 300m away?
- Seems plausible from my own shooting drill experience. But the targets are a bit bigger than you are probably imagining.
  
  I think rookie privates are starting out at 80 to 150 meters with most of their shots.
- With a general attending a recruit's shooting range and personally berating a drill sergeant in front of everyone?
  That would be like the CEO of Walmart going into a store to berate a cashier.
  
  Plus the drill instructor was a captain? I mean...
- Could be Switzerland. We love our old fashioned marksmanship here.
