Having a hard time reaching a consensus so I will post the question here.

Why does it seem as though most torrent uploaders/rippers opt for the MKV (Matroska) container instead of the MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) container when there is absolutely no technical reason for doing so (ie. When all internal video/audio/subtitle stream codecs are compatible)?

I realize that the mkv container is the most flexible as far as codec compatibility, but it is not the most compatible when streaming over the web.
