This is a scheme to control the used console market so they can set their own prices. Hopefully people actually selling their own consoles and undercut them
13How would this control people selling their used hardware? I don't see anything about Sony trying to disable resold consoles.

That's worth a premium to some people.

i mean they've been doing refurbished consoles for multiple generations now, no? The only new thing is that they're selling them directly from Sony's site, rather than going through GameStop like they used to back in the day.

I checked the local classified ads and their prices don't seem too far out of line with what people are asking. I guess there's still demand even though 2020 seems like a long time ago in computer years. Not from me though, I think the PS3 will be my last. There's no need for a newer console now that games can run on linux.
8The PSP and PS3 are the only PS consoles I haven't owned. But after the 5 I'm done. There is absolutely no point in buying another console from them after the disappointment the 5 has been. It's a really nice console and I love the controller but the games just haven't made it worth it for me. I'll stick to PC gaming and emulation from now on.

For a moment I read Refurbished PS5 Pro Consoles, lol. My theory is, the price of the PS5 Pro is this expensive, so the base models look much cheaper now.
3I think they definitely have a strategy that is timed around the age of the base PS5 release. 4 years old = PS5 Pro and beginning of refurbished console sales, to grab the consumers that weren't enticed by the base PS5.
