2"Gnomes" was the title of a very successful illustrated book about fanciful lives of gnomes that was published in the late 70s in Dutch, but maintained its popularity through much of the 1980s.
I believe the book was popularized because of a trend of placing small "garden gnome" statues in gardens, but the book was popular unto itself.
