Seeking advice to refine my plex collection

After using plex for just over a year I've begun to see that some file formats play well and some have issues. To a certain extent the type of hardware I host with, the players I use and types of use have some impact on this so I'm looking for advice to up my game.
I use a synology at home with hardware transcoding. It does not poke out from my home network. I also use a seedbox running a separate Plex server for use outside my home and sharing with a couple friends. I generally am happy with 1080p resolution. especially with the storage limits on my seedbox. Overall my first goals are reliability and good performance., secondary goal is to keep sizes down and third to expand my home collection to more 4k. Other than trial and error what tools can I bring to choosing the file formats that are going to work most solidly for me. Perhaps there is a guide or analysis of file formats out there that someone has already made. Sites like this https://www.plexopedia.com/plex-media-server/general/file-formats-supported-plex/ or https://support.plex.tv/articles/204377253-what-media-formats-are-supported/ tend to provide lists without much qualitative assessment.
Currently my thinking is that h264 mp4 is where I want to start but i do not know video codex that well and this is just my gut feeling.
Thanks for any advice.
