Xfinity Data Caps keep randomly going over, is it torrents?

Every 9 months or so, our Xfinity data usage randomly surges and we get overcharged. The data cap is really high, it's like 1200GB or something crazy, and month to month we typically use maybe 700GB MAX. But so far this month Xfinity are claiming we've used over 1300GB of data and exceeded the cap.

Our usage and practices have been totally normal and consistent month-to-month, no visitors using our Wi-Fi, nothing like that. The only thing I can think of is that I torrented a couple movies and seasons of some old TV shows, but those all together only comprise about 50GB of actual files. Does torrenting those files use massively more data than the size of the files themselves, or am I missing something?
