I like right hand rule. Thumb in direction you want the bolt to go, out or in. Fingers curve in the direction you need to turn.

Unless it's propane, then it's all reverse because people do stupid shit
It's the same. You turn it left to loosen the valve and get propane. Then right to close it.
The fittings on that valve are reverse thread. Lefty tighty righty loosy.
