While they used to be prescription-only in the US, you can now buy the Dexcom Stelo or Abbott Lingo over the counter. Average blood glucose is not going to tell you much - more interesting is the blood glucose spikes after a meal and how quickly you return to baseline.
Did you have a look at Chris van Tulleken's book Ultra-Processed People before the experiment?
I considered getting a CGM, but they all seemed to require all sorts of cloud services and apps and stuff that wouldn't work for me.
