difference between "hot" and "active"?

i saw those in the settings for post sorting, and was wondering what they even do lol

“Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score and time of the latest comment, with decay over time

Hot: Like active, but uses time when the post was published”

- This is what I like about the fediverse. I asked a similar question on Reddit a long time ago. Got a snarky comment "it is what it sounds like" and nothing else.

  there was a bug in hot that showed years old posts. should be fixed in the latest versions.

I also want to know. I notice "hot" seems almost completely useless right now. A lot of posts with hardly any upvotes or comments get counted as "hot". Yet, I believe it's the default sort, which is a shame.

This has almost nothing to do with the Connect app. It is the way Lemmy server calculates the sorting of posts for the feed

I'm not totally sure but I think active is based on the rate of comments and hot is based on the rate of upvotes + random sprinkling of years old stuff.
