Human activity redistributes nitrogen fixation across the terrestrial biosphere

Detailed spatial estimates from a global analysis of biological nitrogen fixation on land reveal that natural environments sustain much less nitrogen fixation than was thought. But agricultural cultivation of nitrogen-fixing crops and forage drastically increases local nitrogen inputs, so that total agricultural nitrogen fixation nearly equals that of all natural lands combined.
