The Art of the one hand

A guide to beating your first ante in balatro

Introduction: Why?

Your first ante is the most important time to get your game going: get a good joker, start your economy off and pick hieroglyph if the option presents itself. All of these require MONEY, which is where the art of the one hand win comes in. Hands are one of the only constant ways you'll have to earning cash and the only method that's available to you from the very first blind, you'll need to maximise your profits to allow you to make the most important choices in the early game to allow you win more runs than not.

First blind:

Realistically you want to go for full house, flush or straight. You need a 75 in chips minimum to win with one hand.

For full house that's 2 6's & 3 A's minimum or more consistently 3 10's and 2 8's Anything below should be scrapped

I've found full house to be the easiest to achieve.

For straight you need a straight to start from atleast a queen.

For flush you need 40 chips, doing the quick math works best, but your absolute worst option is a 10 till 6.

Shops in ante one

In the shop, this early on, you want something game defining or something that can make more money; I'd advise against getting a cheap mult or chip joker because it's a money sink most of the time, you can easily pass through ante one without bothering with your joker lineup, the only exception to this rule are generally good jokers I find (maybe I should do a tierlist).

You should avoid rerolling this early on, you'll probably not even be able to afford anything of worth after you've blown the 5 quid.

A scaling mult joker or a good enabling joker (a joker that's a key piece to a synergy) should be considered, still it's best to get a joker that can function on its own without the synergy: if faced with a choice between Midas and vampire for example in the first shop, go for the midas. While both are key for a synergy Midas can yield considerable value on it's own, vamp cannot (easily and cost effectively do so).

If you find a useful voucher, don't get it until your second blind shop. This rule can be carried with you throughout the game, I still haven't found reason to deviate from it. Why? It's to garner interest, an extra dollar here and there stacks up quick.

Avoid packs, unless they're spectral. Card packs have too much of a chance to give you cards that don't provide any long lasting value, you want a gold or sealed card this early on- something that gives you real value- it's too much of a risk this early on to invest in card packs. Tarot packs this early on don't really have any tarots that provide long lasting value, you're either too unsure or unprepared or undeveloped to gain any real value this early, leave em behind for now.

Second blind

Imma be real with you 2 hands is more consistent here, but go for the 4 of a kind for a one hand. A straight flush is too unlikely, I never go for them. A four of a kind is better off, still it's a risky bet nonetheless. Any rank is suitable for these two.

Now as for 2 hands...

I'd drop the possible combinations of two hands, but regardless I feel the best advice is just go for a high full house and then make up the difference after. Doing the quick math is hard, but you'll eventually be able to feel yourself through it, like how passing through this game is, by feel.

The first boss blind

A completely unaltered deck and hands allows you only 2 possible ways to win with one hand: a four of a kind with 86+ chips or a straight . Both very difficult to obtain. It's more safe to go for your two hand here, so just follow the guide for the big blind.

conclusion

I want to say foremostly, I'm not the greatest balatro player. I just wanted to share what I've noticed after quite a few runs and one deck completed (I've gold sealed the a abandoned deck). I'm open to other's opinions on the matter and interested in learning from others better than me. Alright hope you enjoyed this, bye.

miscellaneous advice

If you have a flush build at the back of your mind a all suit cards are disabled boss blinds is your cue as to what suit to build your flush deck.

Don't skip the blinds early on, the only time I skip is when I get the $25 tag (because that's the economy jumpstart) asides from that there really isn't a good reason to in ante 1, get your money up instead.

Still play it - the game is structured around you feeling your way through, at high enough antes you reasonably cannot calculate every hand before you play to check if it's optimal. Sometimes what you feel out is wrong! So learn to just play the best hand available to you at certain times and just see what you get

  • This feels like AI slop. Generic, safe, emdash parallel sentences, bullets, lists, groups of three. Crucial, especially, optimal, and of course, final thoughts.

Looks like you tightened it up with some of your own words because capitalization is inconsistent. But why not skip the slop and tell us how you really feel?

Quals, all challenges done including Jokerless, some gold chips, on my way to completionist ++.

First off, why heiroglyph? I never take it, but I'll take a telescope even if it fucked over my economy.

Second, depending on the tags, skip first and or second ante. Why? Because it's ante one and you aren't invested and a good rare or uncommon gives you something to build around. You have to think beyond economy when it comes to skipping a blond., but the common wisdom to play every hand and never skip only makes sense if you couldn't easily restart and reroll the tags. They're the only thing you can see before playing a hand.

Your goal in the first ante isn't to beat the first ante, because frankly l, the first ante so trivially easy it's barely worth discussing. What is challenging, however is to be set up with at least $30, in the final shop of the ante so you can spend and still get at least 4 interest, and something to get to the point of one shotting the ante 2 blinds. This becomes even more impactful at purple stake and above when you stop getting bonus dollars for small and then big blind.

So pushing back. Focusing too much on the dollar amount for your economy is a typical, but imo mistaken view to win in Balatro. Worrying about perfect economy in ante one instead of setting yourself to win ante 8 means you'll spend a lot more time flaming out in antes 4, 5, 6. Instead, focus on quickly getting good cards and be comfortable taking them if they will allow you to one shot blinds in antes 2-3. The reason is because doing ante one is trivially easy, and you'll also become extremely good at beating ante one every time, because it's the ante you'll play the most. Getting out of ante one well positioned is more important than beating ante one. If you don't feel good leaving ante one, just restart. It's not going to get better.

    • I did type it out originally to try and post it on Reddit, that kept hitting flags and flags and never allowed me to post it. after doing some research I found out that the way I wrote it might have flagged my content on Reddit as spam or whatever, so I got an AI to fix it up and then I changed the parts that were too mechanical.

I'll scrounge around for the original if I still have it and post that. Totally slipped my mind that this wasn't the OG.

Edit: I did have it, and I've changed the post.

First off, why heiroglyph? I never take it, but I’ll take a telescope even if it fucked over my economy.

Well to be fair this was a quick write up focusing on ante one in particular, I didn't want to get too deep in everything else, making tierlists for vouchers and the likes. Answering the first question I always get hieroglyph whenever it pops up because it's a free safe ante. More time for you to go through shops and hopefully find something good. To the second point (kinda), I agree. Telescope helps source good planet cards consistently throughout a run, it's pretty good. I also go for wasteful (depending on how late into a run I get it), grabber, tong, etc. Vouchers are pretty decent, they're all usually worth getting no matter.

Second, depending on the tags, skip first and or second ante. Why? Because it’s ante one and you aren’t invested and a good rare or uncommon gives you something to build around

Generally I avoid skipping, but there are exceptions. Early on I've found that for getting good jokers it's better for me to go through the shops. 2 jokers upfront and the potential for a pack Vs 2 potential ass or just decent jokers (at more cost though). There are just more odds to getting a good joker through the shop. If it's for a rare though, I might consider it.

So pushing back. Focusing too much on the dollar amount for your economy is a typical, but imo mistaken view to win in Balatro.

Yes, that's the point of the post. It's not about just winning through the ante, it's about maximising resources (money) so you can find yourself in a position to gain maximum value from the shops where you can find the right jokers and whatever. I emphasised getting spectrals and enabling jokers and the rest as opposed to tarot packs and co, use your ante one efficiently and you'll find yourself coming out more runs than not with an excellent starting deck or on the right path to making one.

  • I always go for a joker asap. If you buy a $4 joker after the first blind, it will save you from using 2 hands in the big and boss blinds, so a net loss of $2, and now you have a joker. If you need extra hands, then the added interest gained is a wash.

Getting a money joker is worth more than a mult joker, at that point, even if it only pays out once or twice, that's a dramatic shift in your initial economy, and pays for another joker right away.

    • I agree somewhat. Money joker is always a buy, getting a cheap joker just for the 1 hand wins ehhh not so much. I only get cheap jokers like all the basic hand jokers if I can't get a better joker by second ante, through the first ante though-I'd prefer my $2 saved. No need to get a temp unless I really need to. And at that point the interest can dampen your financial losses.

  • Hmmm still gotta learn the Lemmy markdown
