Award-winning Scottish screenwriter Paul Laverty arrested under terror laws

Laverty, who has won the Palme d’Or for his collaborations with director Ken Loach, was detained by officers in Edinburgh on Monday.

It is understood that Laverty faces a terrorism charge for wearing a T-shirt stating: “Genocide in Palestine time to take action”.

In other cases, the garment has been alleged to be in support of Palestine Action, a protest group proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the Labour Government in July.

There really needs to be a climbdown on this idiocy. Hopefully it will also end the career of the minister who pushed so hard for it.
- That would be the PM then. After all no matter what, he has to sign off on prescribed organisations. Ministers don't get free reign over things like that.
  He's really turning out to be a disappointment. Being a former human rights lawyer I had great hopes he would actually uphold them. I'm guessing that was naive.
the uk government basically just proscribed a uk group as terrorists just so they could give a million pound contract to israel (the very firm that palestine action spoke out against).

  Fucking incredible. I'm amazed at how reasonable the country I left the UK for is every time I read the news. It's not perfect but fucking hell, there's respect, decorum and going from the left wing government to the center right and back again hasn't had massive impacts on my human rights and civil liberties.
