Trench gun is well on it's way to a bigger bayon

The joke I've always heard is that you insert the bayonet into the enemy to align your shots.

At some point you don't even need the gun because the stick is long enough to reach your enemy anyway.

Is the joke that "bayonet" sounds like the diminutive form of a made up word "bayon"?

You could skewer a dumple with that bayon.
