I assumed it was his own idea, and that tvis was not the first time he's done this to work around his curse.
Obvious question? How does he get back to the water? Did someone carry him there? What the fuck?
- That's one of my favorite details of this scene; if you look behind him, you can see other buckets staggered out toward the sea.
  They laid out stepping buckets so he could walk all the way there himself 😂

- If you look, there's a path of buckets behind him.
  The movie is just about flying a boat through the edge of the world to get a dead person back... There's no reason to ignore physics or other such things.
- Did anybody mention the buckets in the background? Dave walked there squidself.
This always bugged me because it means he can go on land anytime he wants as long as he ties bags of water around his feet. Like a reverse diving suit. Or are we supposed to believe that the loophole only applies to buckets?
- It's possible it only applied to tidal zones. Areas that the sea covers regularly. It's fine when covered in sea water would be a reasonable loophole.
It's his reassurance bucket.
