Protesters torch Nepal parliament as PM resigns amid turmoil

Demonstrators in Kathmandu have defied a curfew and broken into and set fire to the parliament building. They had earlier stormed the office of the Nepali Congress, the country’s largest party, and several prominent politicians’ residences.

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down on Tuesday amid escalating anticorruption protests. The resignation came a day after 19 people were killed by security forces in violent demonstrations sparked by a social media ban.

Exuberant young people flooded the parliament complex upon hearing the news, waving their hands and shouting slogans as smoke billowed from parts of the building.

- It helps that the country is small enough for substantial amount of the population to be able to go there
  
  it's the exact opposite. the helpful thing is if you don't need a substantial portion of the entire population to be at a protest to get anything done. it's much harder to halt the entire society for a protest than having so many people that .1% of the population would still be a scary crowd.

It's happening because of india. Indian government trying to control nepal. So much corruption in nepal because of interfering by indian government. Hopefully the new government will be secular and truly free from foreign control. Same thing happened in bangladesh also. India was controlling that country. After the revolution now bangladesh has distanced itself from india.

- Can you really see this working in the United States? Trump would literally give orders to mow everyone in the streets down, and he would frame it as protecting the country from violence. His base would expand greatly from this, as propaganda around destabilization from riots would successfully stoke fear in his voters, as well as a number of independent voters.
  The only reason January 6th got as far as it did is because Trump, the sitting president, wanted the violence to succeed. We can see clearly that this is the case from the fact he pardoned every last one of them, including the most violent.
  The US military is the most monied military in the world by a massive, enormous margin. If it is used against the people, then the people will face absurd losses well before any resolution resembling what we're seeing in this story. It may come to that still... But make no mistake, this is not going to work as well in the US right now. It's not even remotely the same situation.
