Beehaw is a quieter experience than most because it has narrower federation, but you do tend to get a better signal to noise ratio since you miss the spammier instances - I like it.
Beehaw also doesn't federate downvotes which I think is an improvement.

4Posting from a Beehaw account I think does have a psychological effect on me that causes me to naturally tone things down a bit. I think it's been good for me.

Yeah and in addition to that the overall "be(e) nice" rule means that people are generally just a lot more pleasant to be around and less abrasive than what I see in some of the other larger instances.
Only issue is I recently opened another account because theyre leaving lemmy eventually and currently my posts dont federate and all my subscriptions are pending.

Nothing's concrete yet. I have accounts on several instances for their various advantages, but Beehaw is what I've settled on as my main "default" for now. The Subscribe Pending is a bug, I don't think it affects your posts federating so they're separate issues if that's the case.

I'm enjoying Beehaw. I really haven't looked around at other instances that much, but it's pretty chill here.

6sopuli.xyz was my first instance because it was the biggest one that didn't require registration approval, but after Lemmy became popular I switched to lemmy.world because sopuli was defederated from lemmygrad.ml

Yes, this means that I occasionally get wild shit when I choose to scroll through All. Yes, that means I get various shades of genocide apologists and weird bigots, again when I choose not to browse by Local or Subscribed. That's why I'm subscribed to a bunch of cool, moderated communities. I choose the content I see.
That is the approach I prefer for myself. Again, I understand that it's not for everyone.
As far as instances where I'm not (yet) a member, lemmy.dbzer0.com is my favorite by far. Also while I don't have any communities on their instance, the startrek.website people seem to always have something interesting to say.

Lemmy.world for me.
It's generic, has a good list of communities, and the mods are legends with updates and transparency.

hexbear and lemmygrad are fantastic. makes me feel very welcome and safe as a queer person (i am bisexual) that the admins will always crack down on queerphobia in any form. very cool for our trans comrades as well! lemmy.ml is a close third place, many cool ppl on there especially comrade dessalines.

Every instance is good because every instance can interact with many other instances with comments, posts etc. So you arent really locked into one instance. its the magic of federation.
1I'd be very careful with those words given that lemmy.world is rather trigger happy with defederations.
It is almost impossible to completely censor away content and anyone can bridge blocks by creating a new intermediary instance where they can view content of mutually blocked instances but it's not like you see all the fediverse content on any instance.
Matter of fact you just need to look at the blocklists of most instances to get a pretty good guess at the other, less legal, Fediverse out there running almost in parallel to the popular one. But since almost every instance has those blocked you don't see any of that shit in your feeds. Highly censorship resistant, but ultimately an individual is still at the mercy of their instance admins.

I'm liking kbin more for the web UI than anything, but it's had some weird federation issues, so I might move one day.
I used lemmy.ml back when the lemmyverse was pretty much just pro-Russia tankies, it wasn't that great.

2Lemmy and kbin are two different pieces of software that both implement the activitypub protocol in a way that they can federate with each other. So it's not just a different UI on top of Lemmy backend (which is also possible).

Also, the best instance may not be the one that does least defederation. Those Nazi and pedo (they actually exist) instances need to be kept 10000 kilometres away from society. But the defederation must not be done any more than that. Law of diminishing returns starts from that point.
