There are plenty of storms in that region during that time of the year. That's just a 15 second mention on the nightly news. A few trees blown over, someone's trampoline now two miles away, etc etc.
This story is about severe storms and two-inch hailstones causing widespread damage, leaving enough ice on the ground to make it look like a snowfall. When typical daily maximums in December are 100+, that's worthy of a few column inches.
